Analysis of the 10 deadliest US mass shootings from 2008–2023 found that fatal motor vehicle crashes nationwide increased by 14.3%, or nearly 20 additional deaths, on the day after each event. This excess in traffic fatalities was consistent across demographics and driving conditions and was observed even outside states where shootings occurred. The increase in crashes aligned with peaks in public internet search activity about “shooting,” suggesting that mass shootings may contribute to nationwide distraction and acute psychological stress. These findings indicate that the mortality burden of mass shootings extends beyond directly affected individuals to broader public health risks.

This study attempts to assess whether major mass shootings are associated with short-term increases in fatal motor vehicle crashes, as a potential extension of their broader mortality impact.
