“I can’t draw.” “I’m not a dancer.” “I’m not creative.”

We hear this a lot, and here’s the good news: you don’t need to be. In the creative arts therapies, the process matters more than the product. A scribble can be meaningful. A small movement can be enough. Nothing has to be beautiful, and nothing has to be shared.

Curious what that could look like for you? We offer a free 15-minute consultation, with in-person sessions in Chicago and virtual options.

Ever know something feels heavy, but can’t tell if it’s grief, exhaustion, anger, loneliness, or all four?

Not every feeling comes with words. Color, movement, music, and imagery can give emotions somewhere to go before you’re able to explain them. You don’t have to figure it out first. Sometimes making something simply lets you sit with an experience long enough to start understanding it.

Dance/Movement Therapist at InTouch & Motion, Sondra Malling, LCPC, BC-DMT, GL-CMA, shares

“We can develop a multiplicity of answers to this question not just with talking it out, but also using creative means. What might it be like to move new possibilities, creating new patterns of embodiment and taking up space in this world?”

We welcome Kate Ziebart (she/her) to our team as a counseling and art therapy intern!

Kate shares:
“No matter what you’re working through I am here to meet you exactly where you are and support you through it. Sometimes what is most needed is space and time – two things that can feel in short supply in our busy world. I’d love to carve out that space for you to feel connected to yourself. I am passionate about creating a grounded environment for you to build skills for internal resilience and self-regulation. Strengthening your ability to manage feelings of anxiety, stress, and emotional-overwhelm. Big decisions can be overwhelming, shame-based thinking can leave us feeling stuck and insecure, together we can turn down the fear and turn up the self-confidence.

My name is Kate and I am an interdisciplinary artist, movement improviser, and social-emotional educator. I enjoy working with skills like attunement, resourcing, and problem-solving in order to empower the intuitive self. By approaching therapy through a lens of curiosity and compassion, we will explore ways in which certain behaviors protect, express a desire or need, or call us to ask, “Does something need to change?” There is always a way to look at something a little differently, to approach a problem with creativity, and to understand the what and the why with kindness and humor.

We will use art making as a way to release restrictions in the mind and body, opening up space to witness what is calling for our attention. Depending on your needs and interests we can use art therapy as a processing tool, as a way to reveal the unconscious, or as a way to drop into a meaningful and rewarding conversation. I view art therapy as somatic in that it allows us to connect the mind with the body and bring deeper awareness to ourselves.

My hope is that a session with me will feel like a big deep breath. Together we can discover something deep within you while alleviating feelings of isolation in your search for clarity.”

Kate enjoys supporting children and adults in navigating -Anxiety, Stress, Neurodiversity, ADHD, Self acceptance and confidence

Resilience doesn’t mean staying positive, bouncing back fast, or never struggling.

It means having more ways to stay connected to yourself when life gets hard. Sometimes that looks like noticing you’re overwhelmed sooner than you used to. Sometimes it’s setting a boundary, asking for help, or letting yourself feel grief instead of pushing past it.

Creativity is one place to practice all of this. Our latest blog explains how.

We welcome Zach Twardowski (he/him/his)
as our new counseling intern and drama therapist in trading.

Zach’s perspective on healing:

“You don’t have to become someone new to find your way forward – you can begin here, exactly as you are. If you’re experiencing a difficult loss or life transition, feeling lonely, anxious, or like you don’t fully belong, I can provide a safe space to reconnect with yourself and work toward a life that feels more aligned with who you are—not who you think you’re supposed to be.

Hi, I’m Zach. I’m training to be a drama therapist, and I’d be honored to join you on your healing journey. I’m a performing artist, cat-dad, dancing queen, and a survivor – among many other identities. My therapeutic approach is holistic, relational, and creative. I find therapy works best when there is room for both of us to be authentic, and I invite you to bring your whole self to the process. I believe that creativity is essential for healing because it opens up new possibilities and allows us to be vulnerable, which is necessary for transformation. In our collaboration, we can combine talk therapy with movement, mindfulness, role play, and other forms of creative expression. Together, we can develop a step-by-step plan to move beyond insight and toward meaningful change.

I also believe that healing happens in community. I welcome and affirm all identities, and I’m deeply committed to equity and human rights. I strive to create a safe space where you can feel seen, understood, and empowered. My role is to help you reconnect with all parts of yourself while we explore the experiences and stories that have shaped you.”

Zach enjoys supporting adults and children through experiences of grief, anxiety, estrangement and religious trauma, identity, self-esteem, and life transitions.

There are times in life when emotions seem to stop moving. You may feel overwhelmed but unable to cry, exhausted but unable to rest, or disconnected without knowing why. Some people describe this feeling as being “stuck.” They know something isn’t quite right, yet they can’t seem to move forward emotionally.

Feeling emotionally stuck is more common than many people realize. It can happen after a difficult life event, during periods of chronic stress, or even without a clear reason. While talking about these feelings can be incredibly valuable, healing doesn’t always happen through conversation alone. Sometimes, the body needs to be part of the process.

At InTouch & Motion, movement is viewed as more than physical exercise. It can become a way to reconnect with yourself, release emotional tension, and create space for healing.

Whether through gentle stretching, mindful movement, or Dance/Movement Therapy, moving your body can help shift emotional patterns that words alone may not reach.

Grief affects your body as well as your emotions and spiritual Self. Sleep, appetite, focus, and energy can all feel “off” or depleted.

Some small ways to care for yourself:

🌿 Keep basic routines when you can: water, food, rest, a short walk
🌿 Let people help, even with small things - You get to decide what is important for you to carry and what tasks feel okay handing to someone else
🌿 Find a way to express it, like journaling, talking, art, or visiting a meaningful place
🌿 Mark difficult days (birthdays, anniversaries, holidays) with a plan, even a simple one
🌿 Connect with others who understand, like a grief support group

If grief feels overwhelming, or you’re struggling to get through daily life, reaching out to a grief counselor or therapist is a strong, healthy step. You don’t have to carry this alone.

We are happy to connect you with one of our therapists at InTouchandMotion and/or a support group in partnership with . We can also help you find a referral that meets your needs.

Not sure you want to talk to someone but don’t want to feel alone? One option may be just listening- try a podcast like Grief in Rainbows (link in bio)

This is certainly like therapy to me, but with the immersive power of the elements that bring nothing short of magic to healing.

The earth that grounds you, water that cleanses your soul, wind that helps you truly let go, and fire that sets a blaze within you.

To me, this magic and power of the elements is like a mirror- reflecting back the beauty and pain and shadows and light of who you are AND who you are becoming.

It beckons you to see, feel, and know what is underneath it all. To face yourself in an honest way. To reveal what no one can know but YOU.

If this is your journey. This is for you.

THE RESONANCE WITHIN RETREAT
HAWAII 2/27 - 3/4/27

It’s time for you to expand.

It’s time for you to receive.

It’s time for you to let go. To accept. To become.

JOIN ME. Link in bio.
