There is more to infants feet than those kissable toes. And, we all know how much we love to kiss them. But, did you know part of what make babies feet so darn cute is their structure?

All babies are born with a pad of fat where an arch is normally on an adult foot. This "baby" fat is what makes them appear flat and cutely chubby. It isn't until children are about 2 1/2 years old until the arches usually begin to show. But, with age, an infant's soft little chubby feet will get tougher.

Although we wish they could just stay as cute and chubby as they are as infants, our feet carry us around for a lifetime and they need to get tough in order to protect us. And since the soles of the foot is the thickest on the body and is there to protect, we must take care of them from the very beginning.

VERTICAL BROWN STREAKS: Common among those with dark skin. However, it could indicate melanoma & should be checked immediately. A benign nevus or chemical staining could also be the cause (hair color & nail polish)

RED LUNULA: Lunulas that appear red could indicate alopecia (hair loss), carbon monoxide poisoning, cardiac failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hives, cirrhosis, oral prednisone treatment or psoriasis.

BLUE NAILS: Not always the whole nail, could just be the lunula. This could indicate Wilson's disease, silver poisoning or caused by therapy used to treat lupus & other health conditions.

TERRY'S NAIL: The nail will look white & grainy with a pink or red strip at the top. this change can be found in 80% of people with liver cirrhosis, as well as those with congestive heart failure, hyperthyroidism, malnutrition, diabetes or HIV.

LINDSAY'S NAILS: The bottom half of the nail appears white while the top half is a darker pink-brown. This is typical when there is swelling in the nail bed at the bottom & increased melanin production at the top. Chronic renal disease of HIV could be the cause of this condition.

MEE'S LINE: Horizontal white lines appear in the nail. Usually caused by microscopic fragmentation of the nail after growth has been disrupted. Mee's lines could indicate heart failure, Hodgkin disease, renal failure, infection or poisoining by arsenic, thallium or other heavy metals.

SPLINTER HEMORRHAGES: Thin, dark red or brown vertical lines in the nail bed which look like splinters beneath the nails. Possible cause include cirrhosis, mitral stenosis, oral contraceptive use, pregnancy, peptic ulcer disease, scleroderma, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, vasculitis & trauma.
