Afterpausing on stage with Executives' Club of Chicago talking about menopause in the workplace. This is a “hot” topic right now with new menopause policy and laws signed by Governor JB Pritzker this past August.
Here’s what you need to know:
HB 5284: Illinois Menopause Equity and Care Act (signed August 7, 2026)
Workplace protections begin January 1, 2027. The law adds menopause-related conditions to the Illinois Human Rights Act, covering perimenopause, menopause, hot flashes, sleep disruption, cognitive and mood changes, and osteoporosis-related changes.
Bans discrimination and harassment based on these conditions.
Requires reasonable accommodations, such as flexible schedules, modified hours, temperature adjustments, private rest spaces, and remote or light-duty work.
Applies to employers with four or more employees.
Employers must post employees’ rights and include them in handbooks.
Expanded insurance coverage for menopause care follows in 2028.
I’m especially glad perimenopause is named in the bill. For many women, hot flashes, sleep disruption and mood changes start years before the final period, and those are our working years.
This isn’t a niche issue. About 985 million women worldwide were over 50 in 2020, and the UN projects 1.65 billion by 2050.
But compliance is only one piece.
Managers need to know how to respond when an employee brings it up, and benefits need to cover evidence-based treatment. A law opens the door. Education and culture are what get women through it. Health coaches are here to help.
