Tula Yoga Studio Yoga from the Inside Out. We are a new, modern kind of yoga studio.

Tula is a welcoming Chicago studio offering mindful yoga, meditation, somatics, accessible yoga, yoga therapy, MBSR, and teacher training for deeper, more embodied practice. Tula Yoga Studio is a locally owned, independent yoga studio offering classes in Vinyasa, Gentle Yoga, as well as Yoga Basics, Prenatal and Family Yoga. We believe that unwinding, having fun and being part of a community is as important as the yoga itself; and that yoga should always be encouraging and never, ever, intimidating.

Day 10 of 31 Days of Tula Memories: Our Yoga Teacher Trainees ❤️

One of the greatest joys of these past 15 years has been our yoga teacher training program. Over the past eight years, we’ve had the privilege of watching students deepen their practice, discover their own voices, and grow into teachers.

I’ve always been proud that Tula has been a teaching studio, where graduates often had opportunities to begin teaching or subbing almost immediately. Unfortunately, financial realities and necessary schedule adjustments meant we couldn’t offer those same opportunities to our most recent cohort. That’s something I continue to reflect on, and something I hope to make possible again.

While our teacher training faculty has evolved over the years, our intention has remained the same: to offer a strong foundation in yoga that goes well beyond learning how to teach a class. It’s about developing a personal practice, understanding yourself through yoga, and discovering how you want to share these teachings based on your own values and experiences.

We’re now enrolling for our ninth 200-hour teacher training, beginning in January 2027, and I look forward to continuing this tradition.

To all of our past trainees and teachers, thank you for being part of Tula’s story. ❤️

Day 8 of 31 Days of Tula Memories: YOSEMITE! 🏕️

Some of my absolute favorite memories from the past 15 years are from our backpacking and yoga retreats in Yosemite National Park (2014-2018)

For several years, we took groups out to Yosemite, where we would hike about 8–10 miles into the backcountry, carrying everything we needed on our backs. One year, because there was still snow on our usual trail, we ended up taking an alternate route that I later learned was one of the steepest hikes into the area. I’m not sure how we made it, but we did - barely!😥

Once we arrived, we settled into our beautiful little base camp, with views of Half Dome and waterfalls. We’d spend our days hiking, practicing yoga, exploring, resting, and enjoying meals prepared for us by the wonderful guide Dashielle. (Thank you, Dashielle!) We had some amazing teachers join us over the years, including Rhiannon, Cassi, and Kathryn.

There was something really special about those trips. Being completely unplugged, away from our usual routines and everyday conveniences, spending our days outside, and really connecting with nature and one another. Some of those experiences were truly transformative, and I still think about them all these years later.

And on that note, I’d LOVE to do something like this again! If anyone knows of guides or outfitters who organize backcountry trips in Yosemite, Yellowstone, or really any of our national parks, please let me know! I’d love to bring back this kind of experience for the Tula community.

Were you on one of our Yosemite retreats? I’d love to hear what you remember! ❤️

Day 7 of 31 Days of Tula Memories: Yoga at the Farmers Market 🌿

From the summer of 2012 through 2019, we offered a free outdoor yoga class every Sunday at the Logan Square Farmers Market

Our teachers took turns leading class, and everyone was welcome. Kids would join in, dogs would come along, and the market would be bustling around us while we practiced. It was such a fun way to spend a Sunday morning and connect with our neighborhood.

Then 2020 came, and, as we all know, things changed.

I have such fond memories of those mornings and all the people who joined us over the years. Do you remember our farmers market classes? Did you ever stop by for one? Share a memory in the comments - We would love to hear it. 💛

Day 6 of 31 days of Tula memories: Remembering those we’ve lost.

Today I’m remembering three people I’m grateful to have known through Tula and my work.

Emily, or Em, was a dedicated Tula student who also went through our teacher training. She was just getting ready to start teaching when she passed away. We lost her way too soon.

Olinka was also a dedicated student who taught and subbed at Tula throughout the years. To me, she embodied what yoga truly is, and I feel very fortunate that she was part of our community.

And more recently, Evan, a private yoga therapy client I worked with for about a year, passed away after being diagnosed with early-onset dementia. The photo here is of his impressive plant collection in the room where I used to play the crystal bowls for him at his home.

It feels important to include them in these memories. They were part of our lives, and we were honored to know them.

Remembering them brings up the impermanence of life and how much can change along the way. Yoga gives us practices to help us through those changes, including the grief of losing people we care about, and reminds us to be present with one another while we can. ❤️

Day 5 of 31 Days of Tula Memories:
One of my very favorite memories: The Proposal!💛

Jen had been a student at Tula for a long time and regularly came to class with a group of friends. The studio was a special place for her, and Beck knew that. So when he decided to propose, he contacted us to help make it happen right here.

They all came to one of Veronica’s classes, and at the end of class, Beck proposed! Afterwards, we celebrated with a little ch*****ne in the lobby.

It was such a special night, and I still love that Tula got to be part of it. Here are a few pictures of the proposal and the happy couple afterwards. 🥂

Day 4 of 31 memories of Tula

A share from a dear student, Shannon!

HBD Tula and congrats Maile! 🥳🥳🥳
Tula is such a gem in Logan Square - and the journey you’re on to transform it into an even more welcoming and accessible yoga studio is inspirational. We all transform and evolve as we age and you’re doing the same with Tula….loved sharing my bday with Tula, dear friends and yoga this year. 💕🧘🏼

Day 3 of 31 days of Tula memories 🐷

Sometimes the memory is a pig on a leash strolling past the studio. Only in Logan Square. 😂

One of the gifts of mindfulness is noticing the little moments of our lives we might otherwise walk right past. When we’re paying attention, an ordinary day can hold something unexpected and joyful.

Sometimes, the reminder to be present comes with a snout.

Happy Saturday! 💛

Day 2 of 31 days of Tula memories: Miss Cassi’s kids classes! ❤️(Mara and a few other teachers taught as well)

My own kids were just four and five when Tula opened. Between kids’ classes, birthday parties, and Sunday family yoga, we had so much fun. Miss Cassi was an amazing teacher, and her classes were a beloved part of Tula for years.

Looking at these little faces now - how has so much time passed? Enjoy these glimpses of our early days!

Miss Cassi, wherever you are these days, thank you for the joy you brought to Tula. Has anyone ever seen a down dog tunnel? 🐶😊

On September 30, 2011, we celebrated Tula’s opening with friends, family, our original teachers and me, a ball of nerves. Monica Brown Monica Brown taught our very first class that evening. I can hardly believe it’s been 15 years. ❤️

A few glimpses of the beginning: our announcement in the windows; me promoting Tula at the much-smaller Logan Square Farmers Market in my “I Love Logan Square” shirt; my daughter at the front desk (she’s now 20!); me, David, and Rachel Duerkop in my only opening-night photo; and the space as it looked that evening.

For the next 31 days, I’ll share one memory each day from these last 15 years.

Thank you, Monica, for teaching that first class and being Tula’s longest-serving teacher. And thank you to everyone who has been part of these 15 years. Looking at these photos, I remember how much hope went into opening those doors. 🕉️
