The role that kept you safe may now be keeping you small.
The Role You Learned to Play
What role did you learn to play so you could belong?
Some of us became the helper, the good one, the quiet one, the smart one, the funny one, the responsible one, the invisible one, or the one who did not need much. The role may have helped us stay connected in a family system that did not know what to do with our full self.
But intimacy asks for more than a role. It asks for the person underneath it. At some point, we have to ask whether the part we learned to perform is still protecting us, or keeping us from being known.
What role are you ready to loosen your grip on?
Listen deeply. Speak truth with care. Help people remember love.
