Almost every country on earth deworms its children.
Every single one....Except the United States of America.
India deworms THREE HUNDRED MILLION kids in a single day. They built an entire national holiday around it. They call it National Deworming Day.
Japan ran the most successful deworming program in the history of the world and nearly wiped parasites off their entire country.
In Kenya, the children get dewormed right at school. They line up, take a pill, go back to class. Twice a year. Same as picture day.
China did it across more than a billion people. Mexico does it. The Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Nigeria. Hundreds of millions of human beings, all over the world, year after year, like clockwork.
And it isn't only the children.
I have a friend who grew up in Russia. She told me that over there, when you walk into a doctor's office not feeling right, one of the very FIRST things they do is check you for parasites.
Not the last resort. The first stop. They clear it off the table before they go hunting for anything complicated.
Everybody over there knows that.
So now think about every single doctor you have ever sat across from in this country. Your entire life.
Did even one of them ever check you for parasites?
Did even one of them ever say the word out loud to you?
I already know the answer. Because in America it is never the first step. It is never any step at all.
And you are probably thinking right now exactly what I used to think.
That worms are a problem for poor countries. Somewhere hot and far away. Not for a clean, modern American with indoor plumbing and a amazon account / Costco card.
That is exactly what I believed too. For most of my life.
Here is the thing that finally broke that belief wide open for me.
We DO deworm in this country. We just don't deworm the people.
We deworm the dogs that sleep in our beds. Meat industries deworm the cattle whose meat ends up on their plates. People deworm the horses our grandkids ride. We even deworm the barn cats and the backyard chickens. Spring and fall, like clockwork. There is a whole aisle for it down at the feed store.
Every animal in America gets protected on a schedule... and not one single human being does.
Now after everything I have seen these last few years... I am starting to believe they WANT us thinking this way.
Just sit with it for a second.
A country full of people who go their whole lives without ever once being checked for it.
People who keep coming back to the same waiting rooms, year after year, getting handed the same pills that quiet the symptom for a while and never touch what is actually underneath.
A well person is worth almost nothing to a system that only makes its money on the sick ones.
And the easiest way to keep an entire country from ever asking the question... is to convince them the question is beneath them. To make them believe this is some dirty little problem for poor folks far away. Not for them. Never for them…
