I sacrificed more than I was willing to give✋🏾

Who are you becoming while you build?

It’s National Black Business Month, and I want to ask something that has nothing to do with your revenue.

We build because we want freedom. But somewhere in the building, we start trading away the things that made us who we are — our communities, our hobbies, our families, the work that actually feeds our soul.

My practice started as a side hustle until it became the main thing. Two things running at once, and the thing that fed me got pushed to the side first. Every time.

So before you set the next goal: who are you becoming while you build?

“In the middle of everything, I’m just grateful it’s you.”

Some days that’s easy to say. Other days it’s the same argument on repeat, the silence after, the feeling that you’re roommates instead of partners.

Strong relationships aren’t found — they’re built. And the patterns you keep landing in (pursuing, withdrawing, shutting down) usually aren’t random. They’re rooted in what you each learned about love long before you met.

Therapy helps you see the pattern, pause it, and choose each other on purpose. Whether you come together or on your own.

Don’t forget to go out, and LIVE.

Anxiety keeps your mind racing at 3 a.m. Depression makes getting out of bed feel like lifting weights. Different feelings, same result — a life that keeps shrinking.

Therapy helps you get it back. Not by forcing yourself to “calm down” or “be happy,” but by getting to what’s actually keeping you stuck.

Small steps count. A walk outside. A call you’ve been putting off. A yes to something you’d usually skip.

You don’t have to do it alone. 💜

Anxiety in children often manifest through behavior rather than verbal expression.
Key indicators to observe include:
- increased withdrawal during transitions
- expressing dislike for school
- frequent tardiness to school or individual classes
- frequent visits to the school nurse, social worker, or counselor

To better support a child experiencing these signs, it is recommended to do the following approach:
1. Ask specific questions: Instead of generic “ How was your day?”, ask who they eat lunch with, or what the best and hardest parts of their day were.
2. Avoid dismissal: Do not minimize their feelings with comments like “Everything is going to be okay” or “You’re going to make friends”.
3. Practice active listening: Simply listening and offering support can open communication and help reduce anxiety for both the child and parent.

August is National Black Business Month🖤

and we're using it to say the quiet part out loud: Walk With Me Counseling Center is a Black-owned therapy practice, built by therapists who wanted clients to be seen the way we wished someone had seen us.

Tasha Young, LCPC. Veleka Avant. Deja Phillips, LSW, CADC. Three psychotherapists, three specialties, one shared belief: you shouldn't have to explain yourself before you can be helped.

We offer online therapy across Chicago and all of Illinois.
Anxiety, depression, trauma, couples work, and the relationship patterns that keep showing up no matter how many times you tell yourself this year will be different.

Culturally competent care isn't a buzzword here. It's the whole reason this practice exists.
