Have you heard of an anxiety bag?

An anxiety bag is a small, portable collection of sensory tools you can reach for when anxiety, panic, or overwhelm starts to build. Think of it as a grounding kit for your nervous system, something that gives your brain and body sensations to focus on when anxious thoughts start taking over.

Your bag might include things like:

- Something cold, like an ice pack
- Sour or strong-tasting candy
- A fidget or textured object
- Something with a calming scent
- Headphones or another tool that helps reduce sensory input

The goal isn't to make anxiety disappear. These tools can help interrupt the cycle, bring your attention back into the present, and give your nervous system a chance to settle.

But there's an important distinction between reaching for an anxiety bag once in a while when you need extra support, and feeling like you can't function without it.

Want to know the difference? Follow along for Part 2.

September has a way of making us feel like we should be starting over.

New routines. New goals. New schedules. A fresh start.

But your nervous system doesn't know it's September 1.

You don't suddenly need to be more productive, more organized, more motivated, or more "together" because the calendar changed.

Sometimes mental wellness looks less like a fresh start and more like asking: what needs your attention right now?

Maybe it's rest. Maybe it's a boundary. Maybe it's reconnecting with someone. Or maybe it's finally asking for support.

You do not have to reinvent yourself this month, or any month.

Save this for the days this month when September starts feeling like a deadline instead of a doorway.

This is for the grief that doesn't get acknowledged.

Today is National Grief Awareness Day, and we want to talk about the kind that doesn't come with flowers or a funeral. The kind you carry quietly. For a relationship that ended.

A version of yourself you had to leave behind. A life you thought you'd have by now. Grief shows up in the car. In the morning. In the middle of a perfectly fine day, when something small reminds you of something big.

That kind of grief is real. And you don't have to move through it alone. We work with grief in all its forms at Gemstone, expected, unexpected, and the kind that doesn't have a name yet.

There’s something powerful about a practice that asks so little.

No perfect meditation. No journaling routine. No goal to accomplish.

Just stepping outside and noticing what happens when the mind has a little more room to wander.

That same curiosity is at the heart of meaningful therapy. Rather than immediately trying to change a thought, feeling, or behavior, therapy can create space to understand why it’s there in the first place.

Dr. Jenny Martin, founder of Gemstone Wellness, recently brought this perspective to TIME in a conversation about the “thinking walk.”

Meet Maty, and learn more about what anxiety real is.

08/24/2026

Doesn't everyone have anxiety?

Yes. And also, not all anxiety is the same. There's the kind that visits. And the kind that moves in.

If yours has moved in, you know the signs. The running tab that never closes. The worry you can't logic your way out of.

That's not just stress. That's your nervous system trying to protect you from something it learned a long time ago.

Understanding that is where the real work begins.

Mati works with individuals, couples, and families at Gemstone Wellness, in English and Español. You don't need to have it figured out to start.

Based in Chicago, with telehealth available across Illinois.

August is National Wellness Month.

This month we're asking you to try something harder than it sounds: one honest sentence, once a week, written by hand.

Affirmations aren't magic. But writing a sentence your body doesn't fully believe yet, and staying with whatever comes up after, is actual nervous system work. This is how the practice begins. This is wellness work. This is healing.

Save this. Come back to it each week or whenever you need it. See what changes over time, and on your timeline. You're in charge.

"Trauma dumping" gets talked about like something to apologize for.

Our founder, Dr. Jenny Martin, sat down with TIME to talk about what really separates needing support from overwhelming someone with it. Her answer surprised us, in the best way.

"The urge to get it all out is so incredibly healthy."

The problem was never that people need to talk about what hurts. It's that most of us were never taught how to ask for room to do it, or how to check if the room is even there.

Healthy relationships can hold difficult things. They can also hold boundaries. Both, at once.

There's more nuance than fits in one caption, so we put it in the carousel instead.

your old brain is still standing guard, demanding you solve every problem before you’re allowed to rest. that’s a heavy way to live. you are allowed to just exist in the morning without earning your right to be here. put the armor down for a minute. finding your footing doesn’t require you to be a superhero today.

DM us whenever. no pressure.
