“The Doctor That Believes Sleep Is a Human Right”

Justin Fiala, MD, pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine physician at Northwestern Medicine Canning Thoracic Institute, has been named a Men’s Health 2026 Health Care Hero for his work expanding access to sleep care in Chicago.

In collaboration with Community Health, Dr. Fiala helped launch a no-cost sleep clinic in 2021 and co developed the Community Health Initiative for Patient centered Apnea Protocols. The program uses a patient centered approach to evaluate and treat sleep disorders, helping address long standing gaps in access for individuals who may otherwise go without care.

Dr. Fiala’s work highlights the vital role sleep plays in healing, recovery and overall well being — both in the community and across hospital settings.

What if we could understand lung disease before it starts?

That question is driving the American Lung Association Lung Health Cohort Research Study, a first of its kind effort to study lung health at its peak. A major milestone was just reached: More than 3,000 young adults are now enrolled nationwide, with more participants needed here in Chicago.

Leading the study locally is Ravi Kalhan, MD, Northwestern Medicine pulmonologist and associate dean for faculty affairs at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Over the next five years, the research team is following adults ages 25 to 35 to better understand how environment, lifestyle and physical activity shape long term lung health.

By identifying early drivers of chronic lung disease and lung cancer, this study could help shape prevention strategies for generations to come.

Marc Sala, MD, director of the Northwestern Medicine Bronchiectasis Program, is headed to the American Thoracic Society 2026 annual conference to present new research on long COVID.

His team’s work focuses on the value of cardiopulmonary exercise testing and what it can reveal about symptoms, physiology, and what patients with long COVID may expect looking ahead.

Prairie Fiebel and Zachary Dortzbach, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine medical students, will present this research alongside Dr. Sala. We are proud to highlight their contributions and the collaborative mentorship that made this work possible!

At 16, Samson Campbell was diagnosed with lymphoma. After chemo, radiation, relapse, and a life‑saving stem cell transplant from his brother, the cancer was gone — but the journey wasn’t over.

Years later, graft‑versus‑host disease affected his lungs. In 2025, he was hospitalized, listed for transplant in December, and received new lungs at Northwestern Medicine on December 30.

Today, at 39, Samson continues to recover — walking stairs, working out, breathing freely again— and is grateful for every simple moment.

What makes his story even more powerful? He’s been a stem cell transplant nurse at a local Chicago hospital for 14 years, working on the very unit where he once received care.

“Being a patient again reminded me how much the little things matter. Those moments — the call light, the reassurance, the presence — can mean everything.”

This Nurses Week, we celebrate compassion, resilience, and care that comes full circle.

This Mother’s Day, Jodi Graf celebrated a milestone she once feared she might not reach.

Jodi, a NASA engineer and mother of two, traveled from Houston to Northwestern Medicine in Chicago for a double‑lung transplant through our innovative DREAM Program. We are the only health system in the country offering this approach for select patients with advanced lung cancer who have exhausted other treatment options.

Today, she is cancer‑free, breathing without oxygen and spending Mother’s Day with her sons. 💜

Several of our team members are attending the American Thoracic Society 2026 Annual Conference. Conferences like these are crucial to staying up-to-date on the latest breakthroughs and sharing research that pushes medicine forward.

Susan Russell, MD, medical director of the Medical ICU at Northwestern Medicine, will present two posters at the conference.

One covers immersive simulation training for treating respiratory failure in pregnancy, while the other examines how rapid response teams are structured and measured across leading U.S. hospitals.
