Everyone asks: “What is the best country for mental health clinicians?”

Instead of asking: “What is the best country for my practice model?”

A beautiful destination will NOT solve licensing issues, tax obligations, or practice logistics.

Those who effectively build location-independent careers plan for:
✔ Licensure
✔ Client location
✔ Technology
✔ Privacy and HIPAA
✔ Business systems
✔ Visas
✔ Taxes
✔ Lifestyle

The goal is not simply moving abroad or extended travel.
The goal is creating a location-independent private practice that supports the life you actually want to live.

One of the biggest myths is that therapists have only one career path.

The reality is that psychology offers many ways to make an impact because psychological skills are needed in more than the therapy room.

For some, that means telehealth. For others, it may be teaching, coaching, consulting, creating educational resources, or specialized niches such as psychological evaluations, professional writing, etc. and additional meaningful ways to support people navigating life transitions.

✨If you have ever wondered what a more flexible career in psychology could look like, you are not alone. Visit the link in bio for the Location Independent Private Practice Toolkit and more goodies.

Migration is not only about where you live. It is also about who you are becoming.

Every country you move to, every language you learn, every community you leave changes you in ways that are not always visible.

This is one (of several) reasons I love working with migrants (immigrants, emigrants, expats, long-stay travelers, etc.).

For immigration, every psych evaluation is a reminder that behind every application is a human story filled with resilience, loss, hope, and adaptation.

It is also why Sava Healing exists, which partially derives from the passion to help both lay people and therapists navigate life across borders as well as shows therapists other ways of using their skills via evaluations.

Relying solely on 1:1 clinical hours can create significant logistical friction when managing time-zone shifts and travel days.

To build a truly stable, location-independent practice, consider diversifying into non-clinical revenue streams that leverage your master’s or doctorate degree:

• Clinical Supervision: Supporting associate-level therapists remotely (where state boards permit).

• Continuing Education: Designing peer-reviewed CEU courses for other practitioners or organizations.

• Specialized Consulting: Translating psychological concepts into frameworks for organizations or tech platforms.

There are a host of other ways to utilize clinical knowledge in settings outside of clinical therapy.

Diversification protects revenue, prevents clinical burnout, and provides the scheduling flexibility required to move freely and decide how and where life happens.

Transitioning to a location-independent practice requires more than a laptop and a stable Wi-Fi connection.

To protect your license and your clients, compliance must dictate your logistics.

Before booking a destination, verify these three operational layers:

✨Jurisdictional Rules: Confirm where your license allows you to practice, and where your specific clients must physically be located during session hours.

✨Data Security: Implement a hardware-level VPN and utilize encrypted routers to maintain strict confidentiality outside a fixed office environment.

✨Malpractice Alignment: Secure written confirmation from your underwriter detailing the specific geographic boundaries of your policy.

Operating ethically across borders is entirely possible with the right systems in place. What is the biggest administrative bottleneck holding back your practice?

You do not have to quit your career to see the world.

Most people think location independence means becoming an influencer.

*spoiler alert…

Therapists can build practices that allow them to work from different places with thoughtful planning around licensing, logistics, and client care.

The goal is not to travel full-time.
The goal is to have the option.

Do you have to move out of state or even out of country to be location independent?

Not at all.

One of the biggest misconceptions about location independence is that it requires living abroad, becoming a full-time traveler, or constantly hopping between destinations.

The fact? Location independence is about having options.

It’s the freedom to choose where you live, work, and build your life whether that is in your current city, another state, or across the world (where legally allowed to work).

The goal is not a specific location. The goal is creating a life that gives you the ability to choose and ability to optimize what matters most to you.
✨ More freedom
✨ More flexibility.
✨ More choice
✨ More impact

Therapists often assume there is only one path to success:
~See more clients.
~Work more hours.
~Grow a bigger caseload.

The most fulfilled therapists build careers around their natural strengths.

Some are educators.
Some are creators.
Some are writers.
Some are builders.

Not all therapists grow the same way.

The question is not whether you are entrepreneurial.
The question is how you are wired to make an impact.

Swipe to find your therapist archetype →

The fun part? These can all still be wonderfully fulfilled while location independent.

The done-with-you guide is on the Location-Independent Toolkit

There’s a fascinating study on centenarians—people who live to 100 years and beyond. Researchers found that longevity is not only about physical health.

It is also linked to:
✓ Cognitive resilience — the ability to adapt, learn, and stay flexible✓ Economic resilience — having financial stability and options✓ Personal resilience — navigating uncertainty, setbacks, and change

Let’s make the connection goon to mental health clinicians.

Whether you are building a private practice or working toward location independence, these same factors matter.

The therapists who thrive long-term are not just building clinical skills. They are building resilience in multiple areas of life.

Maybe the goal is not simply creating a business that lasts.

Maybe it is creating a career AND a life that can thrive for decades.

What type of resilience are you focused on building right now?

For assistance in expanding starting this new life path to not do it alone, follow the Location-Independent Private Practice Toolkit (download in bio).
