A few months ago, I volunteered my haircutting services to the skilled nursing facility that gave me my first opportunity as a CNA while I was studying and learning how to care for patients on my journey to becoming an RN. It had been a while since I picked up my shears, but I wanted to give back to the place that helped me take my first steps into healthcare. I did just that a few months ago with the Dementia and Alzheimer’s unit.
After working two back-to-back night shifts at the hospital where I currently work, I spent today volunteering my time cutting hair for residents on the TRC unit at that facility. The TRC unit focuses on mental health and rehabilitation, helping individuals build the skills, confidence, and independence needed to transition back into the community and reconnect with their families and friends. For some, this will home and the only safe place they have and get to call home.
To say my heart was warmed and touched would be an understatement.
Today reminded me that it’s often the small things we take for granted …something as simple as getting a haircut—that can make a meaningful difference in someone’s day, confidence, dignity, and overall well-being.
Life is busy, chaotic, and full of ups and downs, happy moments, sad moments , but if you have a talent, skill, or gift to share, I encourage you to find a small moment to volunteer your time. Many facilities don’t always have someone available to provide services like haircuts, and something that seems small to us can mean the world to someone else.
You never know how much your time and kindness may impact another person’s life. And who knows those volunteer opportunities can sometimes grow into contracted or paid opportunities while still allowing you to serve your community. It is a not a glamorous pay but it makes your heart richer.
Today my tiredness went away. Today brought me genuine moments with strangers who became special individuals 💕
