I’m over 40 and I fought so many battles to be here: poverty, cancer, sexism, racism, classism, ableism, etc.

I’m grateful that I’ve made it this far and I’m too busy fighting for my life to be worried about a fat roll, a wrinkle, an ache, a gray hair, etc. What battles have you been fighting recently?

7 Things that I say “No” to as a Healthy Aging specialist
❤️Polypharmacy: I was trained to avoid overprescribing medications. 6 medications or less is the goal
❤️Fatphobia: There are different types of bodies and that is ok. Body diversity is real!
❤️Praising Weight Loss: I don’t assume that weight loss is a good thing. There could be a bad thing happening
❤️Drinking Soda: I drink herbal tea instead
❤️Inactivity: I stay active
❤️Working 7 Days each Week: I take at least one rest day each week
❤️Being a Serious Person: I laugh a lot everyday!

Let’s talk about how fatphobia harms people.

For people with larger bodies: when working on their healthy habits, they may feel frustrated that they can’t “look healthy.” So even if they feel better, they often abandon the healthy habits because they can’t look the way they think they should. I have found it freeing to just allow your body to be your body and do the healthy habits anyway because you will feel better. Body diversity is real and just because a person has a larger body does not mean that they will have diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. As we age, we tend to hold on to an extra 20-30 pounds (or more) in case of illness and that is normal.

For people with smaller bodies: they don’t feel a need to work on their healthy habits because they think that they “look healthy.” They are often shocked when they are diagnosed with diabetes or hypertension. Just because you have a smaller body does not mean that you can eat a bunch of junk food and not exercise. You still need to work on your healthy habits. Also, as you age, work on maintaining your weight and don’t lose any weight because your “just in case” margin is low. You will need every single pound in case of illness.

I have taken care of thousands of patients in different settings and I have found this to be true. You have to take care of your body no matter what size it is. And if you do, you can age well and stay functional for a long time.

Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk ❤️

Check out this conversation with The topic of beauty and aging is an interesting one because as humans, we do show physical signs of dysfunction in our bodies. There is a concept of normal aging and abnormal aging.

When I was in my late 20s and early 30s, I looked physically exhausted and stressed out because I was. When I look back at my old pictures, I can see the signs that I was doing too much and not resting enough. I was working a lot, marathon training, and not eating much (because I wasn’t hungry which can be a sign that you are stressed. Some people stress eat and some people stress starve).

As social beings, you have to consider the purpose of physical manifestations of dysfunction. It is supposed to signal to a person: maybe I need to do less or maybe I need to ask for help. It should also signal to their family and community: maybe they need some help. It is supposed to drive some kind of ACTION. But nowadays all people do is talk about people and that usually makes people feel worse.

I’m glad that I knew enough to take ACTION. I quit my job and a bunch of activities. I went to the doctor and was diagnosed with cancer. I was treated and then I started prioritizing work-life balance over doing too many things. My body was trying to tell me something and I listened. What has your body been telling you lately?

One of the best parts of my job: taking care of older adults who are not afraid of aging. They live fearlessly without worrying about a fat pad, a wrinkle, an ache, a gray hair, etc. It’s hard to worry about the signs aging when you are busy having fun or focusing on your purpose. They inspire me to live my life to the fullest everyday ❤️

One of the best parts of my job is that I get to care of older adults who are not afraid of aging
❤️They live fearlessly without worrying about a fat pad, a wrinkle, an ache, etc
❤️They have a lot of experience with aging and they have made peace with the process
❤️They often say “it (aging) is better than the alternative (death)”
❤️The lesson: Don’t let the fear of aging keep you from LIVING
❤️They inspire me to live my life to the fullest everyday
❤️I’m not worried about a fat pad, a wrinkle, an ache, etc
❤️I take that inspiration and pass it on to my younger patients and my followers

Don’t mind me, just prepping my body for the next concert in the rain🫣

I actually run and walk outdoors year-round so that my body stays weather-ready
-I’m water-resistant, heat-resistant, cold-resistant, and snow-resistant
-As runners, we call them “training runs” and it’s mostly about training for all weather
-This skill translates well for most outdoor activities including concerts
-What’s a hidden skill that you have?
