If you’re considering surgery for suspected endometriosis, finding the right surgeon matters.
One of the biggest misconceptions I see is that because most OB/GYNs can perform endometriosis surgery, they’re all equally equipped to do so. That’s simply not the case. Endometriosis excision is a specialized skill, and surgeon experience truly matters.
The goal isn’t just to remove visible disease. It’s to thoroughly excise endometriosis while minimizing adhesions, preserving normal anatomy, and protecting fertility whenever possible. Excision is also different from ablation (“burning”) of endometriosis, and for many patients, that distinction can make a meaningful difference in long-term outcomes.
Not everyone with painful periods or pelvic pain needs surgery. A thorough evaluation is important, and surgery is just one tool when appropriate. But if surgery is recommended, I encourage you to ask about your surgeon’s training, experience, and how often they perform excision surgery.
Unfortunately, we don’t have any local NaPro-trained excision surgeons. Some of the closest options include Dr. Christopher Stroud at FMCC in Fort Wayne and Dr. Blaise Milburn in Steubenville. I’ve also had patients travel to Veritas in St. Louis and have heard positive feedback about their care.
Traveling isn’t always practical, but if endometriosis is suspected and surgery is being considered, I truly believe it’s worth consulting with a specialist before moving forward.
You only get one first surgery, and having it done well can make a significant difference.
