CLIENT SUCCESS STORY
Client L came to us needing support with their 1099 filings and who needed them.
→ While that is a very typical issues, this client had a bit more going on than just that.
→ They already had an accountant handling tax filings, but key details about how contractor payments were being recorded had been missed.
→ Whoever managed it previously, whether in-house or freelance, we couldn’t say for sure, hadn’t booked payments to owners and vendors correctly.
→ The result was a meaningful under- and over-reporting of payments, which meant their 1099s were significantly off.
→ There was also no clear distinction being made between payments made via third-party processors versus Zelle or check, a detail that is very necessary to distinguish.
→ Once we got into the source documents and started comparing everything line by line, the full picture came into focus.
→ We even found several instances where QuickBooks had “auto-corrected” transactions on its own and incorrectly.
→ Those had to be manually caught and re-classed to bring everything back in line. They were in turn able to complete their 1099 filings, late, yes, but correct.
→ → It’s worth asking yourself, when’s the last time you confirmed your books reflect what actually happened, versus what QuickBooks assumed happened?
If you’re not sure, that’s usually a good sign it’s time for a closer look.
