A diagnosis can change your life.

But sometimes it can also change the lives of others.

In Part 2 of Dr. Keith Melvin's story, he shares with Michelle Hopkins the importance of going to the doctor, advocating for your health.

Years ago he created the annual Black & White Cancer Ball that raises awareness and supports cancer survivors.

As we recognize Men's Health Month, his story serves as an important reminder: early detection, regular checkups, and knowing your health history.

Take a moment to watch, learn, and consider when your last checkup was.

Today, we celebrate the fathers, grandfathers, mentors, and father figures who show up for their families and communities every day.

As we recognize Father’s Day, we’re also reminded that June is Men’s Health Month—a time to prioritize not only physical health, but mental and emotional well-being too.

Too often, men are expected to carry the weight of responsibility without taking time to care for themselves. But strength isn’t just about pushing through. It’s about checking in, asking for help when needed, making time for preventive care, and prioritizing your health.

To every father and father figure: thank you for your love, guidance, sacrifice, and support. Today, we celebrate you and encourage you to take care of yourself just as fiercely as you take care of others.

Because healthy fathers help build healthy families and healthy communities.

Happy Father’s Day from Closing the Health Gap.

Freedom. Resilience. Legacy.

Juneteenth is more than a celebration of freedom—it is a reminder of the strength, perseverance, and resilience that continue to shape our communities today.

As we honor the day enslaved people finally learned they were free, we also reflect on the ongoing work of advancing equity, opportunity, and health for all.

At Closing the Health Gap, we recognize that health equity is a vital part of that journey. We remain committed to closing disparities, uplifting communities, and creating a future where everyone has the opportunity to live a healthy and thriving life.

Today, we celebrate our history, honor our ancestors, and continue the work toward a healthier, more equitable tomorrow.

Are you caring for a parent, spouse, family member, or loved one who is 60 years of age or older?

If you're helping with transportation, preparing meals, grocery shopping, managing medications, assisting with daily activities, handling finances, or monitoring health conditions, you may be a caregiver.

Caregiving is an act of love, but it can also be physically, emotionally, and mentally demanding.

Did you know that Black caregivers often spend more than 30 hours per week providing care and may experience increased stress, depression, and health challenges of their own?

That's why the Center for Closing the Health Gap created the Caregiver Support Series.

This program provides a safe and supportive space where caregivers can:
✔ Share their experiences
✔ Learn new coping strategies
✔ Practice self-care
✔ Connect with others facing similar challenges
✔ Access valuable resources and support

You do so much for others. It's time to invest in yourself, too.

🥤 WAIT! Before you take that next sip… ‘Rethink Your Drink’

Many popular beverages contain more added sugar than most people realize. Over time, sugary drinks can contribute to health concerns like high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and obesity.

That’s why we’re encouraging our community to take a closer look at what’s in their cup and make informed choices that support long-term health.

Special thanks to the team behind this educational initiative board:

👏 Jenna, University of Cincinnati Dietetic Student

👏 Gabrielle, University of Cincinnati Dietetic Student

and participation by

👏 Dania, Community Engagement Coordinator and recent University of Cincinnati graduate

Together, they helped develop the “Rethink Your Drink” educational materials used at community engagement events to spark important conversations about health and wellness.

The next time you reach for a drink, take a second look at the label… and ‘Rethink Your Drink’.

Maybe no one has ever called you a caregiver.

Maybe you're "just helping Mom."

Maybe you're driving Dad to appointments.

Maybe you're checking on a neighbor.

Maybe you're raising grandchildren while trying to manage your own health.

But caregiving takes a toll.

Physically.
Emotionally.
Mentally.

And you shouldn't have to carry it alone.

Join us June 20 for a conversation, resources, and support designed specifically for caregivers.

You call it helping family.

You call it doing what’s expected.

You call it being a daughter, son, mother, father, auntie, uncle, or grandparent.

But what you’re doing has a name:

Caregiving.

Many Black adults are part of the “sandwich generation”—caring for aging parents while raising children at the same time. It can be rewarding, but it can also be exhausting.

If you’ve ever felt like everyone depends on you and nobody checks on you, this is your reminder:

Your health matters too.

Join our Caregiver Support Series on June 20 and connect with others who understand the unique challenges of caring for loved ones while trying to care for yourself.

🚨 Could you save someone you love?

Most of us assume we’d know what to do in an emergency.

But when a heart stops beating or a child starts choking, panic can take over.

That’s why CPR Awareness Week matters.

This video is a look back at one of our CPR trainings, where community members learned lifesaving skills that could make all the difference in a critical moment.

❤️ CPR can help keep blood flowing to the brain and vital organs until emergency responders arrive.

❤️ Learning CPR takes just a few hours.

❤️ The life you save could be someone you know.

Don’t wait for an emergency to wish you had the training.

📌 Save this post as a reminder.
📤 Share it with someone who needs to learn CPR.
💬 Tell us: Have you ever had to perform CPR or help someone who was choking?

Men’s Health Month is a reminder that prevention is powerful.

Many of the most common health conditions affecting men—including heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and certain cancers—can be managed or even prevented through regular screenings and healthy lifestyle choices.

This month, challenge yourself or the men in your life to:

✔ Know your numbers
✔ Prioritize heart health
✔ Check in on mental health
✔ Stay up to date on screenings
✔ Schedule preventive care

Your health matters. And taking care of yourself helps you continue showing up for the people who depend on you.
