When you want to invite change, don't focus on how things are. Focus on how they could be.

Get in the zone.
One of the best ways to elevate your mood is to find the activity that puts you in the zone, or “flow” as happiness doctors call it. You do this by engaging in an activity that you find challenging, but conquerable. You’ll know you’re experiencing flow when you lose time doing this activity and basic needs (eating, drinking) are not even considered. For me, it’s pasteling outdoors. What’s yours?

Fun in therapy? What?
Yup, I believe humor has a place in therapy. It’s a tool to keep us from taking ourselves too seriously. Laughter is a guaranteed way to reduce stress, and it’s a fantastic way to put things in perspective. Plus it makes us feel better. And isn’t that why you’re here? For sure it’s why I’m here. To help people feel better.

It feels quite different when someone says "I apologize." versus "I'm sorry." One feels much more heartfelt. As a school-based therapist, I taught the students that "I'm sorry." means "I won't do it again." It helped them understand the need for an apology. Using the words "I apologize." might be taken as "I didn't mean to give offense." Which apology would you rather have?

Ever made a serious mistake? How about a Sirious mistake? If only the mistakes we made in real life were fixed as easy as explaining it was a translation mistake. Maybe it is. Maybe if we all communicated a little clearer, there would be less chance of misinterpretation and hurt feelings. Give it a try.

Take a compliment.
It's free. So many of us struggle to just say "Thank you!" when someone pays us a compliment - as if we don't believe it or deserve it. Believe it! You deserve it!

Ann Curry wrote, “If you do good, you feel good. It’s the most selfish thing you can do.” Today, go out and be this kind of selfish!
