Not all high cholesterol is caused by diet or lack of exercise. Millions of people have a genetic cause of high cholesterol called Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH) but only a small percentage are currently aware of this genetic risk that impacts them and is a risk factor to their family.

David's proactive heart care really paid off!

Knowing that heart disease is often hereditary, TriHealth patient David Gibson began monitoring his own heart function with regular checkups after his brother's quintuple bypass surgery. And while that surgery was over two decades ago, David's vigilance finally paid off when his care team found blockages in some of his major arteries following some symptoms of angina, allowing for a proactive bypass of his own.

David is now a bigger advocate for preventative care than ever, encouraging everyone to take steps to understand their health before it becomes an issue.

"Consider yourself fortunate that you even have the opportunity to ponder the situation," he says. "A lot of people are not afforded that opportunity... the first event of symptoms is their last."
