Nurse anesthetists have been providing anesthesia care to patients in the United States for 150 years. As one of the oldest existing educational programs for nurse anesthetists, the University of Cincinnati Nurse Anesthesia program has a long history of academic and clinical excellence. Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) are advanced practice nurses and anesthesia professionals who sa

fely administer approximately 32 million anesthetics each year in the United States. As a CRNA, you will provide anesthesia care to patients before, during, and after surgery or childbirth. You will practice with a high degree of autonomy as you work collaboratively with other healthcare providers such as surgeons, anesthesiologists, dentists, and podiatrists. The UC Nurse Anesthesia program requires 28 months (seven semesters) of full-time study. Clinical experience begins in the first semester to allow students to integrate and apply concepts learned in the classroom.

The UC NAP had a fantastic time at AANA Annual Congress 2026 in Boston! The students enjoyed interfacing with other RNSAs from around the country, discussing new and exciting updates in anesthesia, and having fun at Fenway Park for Party with a Purpose. Special shout outs to our students who presented oral poster presentations and Dr. Beth Ann Clayton for her featured presentation.

The University of Cincinnati Nurse Anesthesia Alumni Advisory Council and the Nurse Anesthesia Program Faculty are pleased to announce the 2026 Mary Alice Costello Scholarship Recipients:

The Mary Alice Costello Scholarship Fund at the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing was established in 2017 to benefit doctoral-level students in the nurse anesthesia program. Mary Alice Costello founded the Cincinnati General Hospital School of Nurse Anesthesia in 1945 and served as director for 27 years. She was one of the first nurse anesthetists to become adept in administering spinal anesthesia and taught many nurse anesthetists this skill from around the country. She was also the first nurse anesthetist to utilize a ventilator in the anesthetic care of a patient, and she commissioned the development of the first defibrillator at Cincinnati General Hospital. She served as the president of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists in 1963-64 and led collaborative efforts between nurse and physician anesthesia providers and their respective professional organizations.

Nurse anesthesia program alumni and faculty created the Mary Alice Costello Fund in honor of her legacy. The University of Cincinnati Nurse Anesthesia Program Alumni Advisory Council seeks to provide financial support from this fund to nurse anesthesia students who demonstrate a commitment to the nurse anesthesia profession and possess leadership qualities that advance the profession.

Congratulations to Kirsten and Laura! Thank you to all the highly qualified and dedicated RNSA2 students who submitted their scholarship applications. We also wish to thank the donors of the CoN UC Nurse Anesthesia Program, whose contributions make these scholarships possible.

Representing the University of Cincinnati on the global stage! Rachel Smith-Steinert, DNP, CRNA, FAANA, presented at the 15th World Congress of Nurse Anesthetists in Brisbane, Australia, showcasing UC's leadership in global nurse anesthesia education. Her presentation highlighted the establishment and benefits of UC's International Nurse Anesthetist Educational partnership with a program in France. Pictured with Rachel is Christophe Debout, partner Nurse Anesthesia Program Director at IFITS in France, and Pascal Rod, the recent International Federation of Nurse Anesthetists' service award recipient.
