Most people think core training starts with the movement.

It doesn’t.

Before you load a pattern, you need to be able to breathe through it. Diaphragmatic breathing creates the intra-abdominal pressure that makes your core actually work — not just look like it’s working.

Here’s the progression:

✅ Dead bug, legs supported → learn the breath
✅ Legs unsupported → maintain the breath while holding position
✅ Contralateral resistance → now prove you can do both under load

If you lose the breath, you’ve lost the core. It’s that simple.

This is the foundation we build from at Optimal HP — whether you’re a runner, a lifter, or just trying to move without pain.

If your coach or trainer isn’t cueing this, send them this video. 👇

Can’t touch your toes? It’s probably not your hamstrings.

Watch what happens when I squeeze a yoga block between my knees and try again — more range of motion, same hamstrings, nothing stretched.

That pulling sensation in the back of your legs isn’t tightness. It’s your nervous system guarding because it doesn’t feel stable enough to let you go further.

Your hamstrings aren’t short. They’re protected.

Stretching a guarding muscle doesn’t fix the guard — which is why your flexibility never seems to actually improve.

Comment below or DM if you’ve been stretching forever with zero results 👇

Tight upper traps that never seem to loosen up? Stretching isn’t the problem — and it’s not the solution either.

When your head shifts forward — whether you’re at a desk, behind the wheel, or pressing overhead — your cervical spine loses its natural curve. The joints at C5, C6, and C7 start taking on load they weren’t designed to handle, and your upper traps kick into overdrive trying to compensate.

That’s not a flexibility issue. That’s a load and position issue.

Stretching a muscle that’s guarding under load just gives you temporary relief. It tightens right back up because nothing actually changed.

What works: getting into the tissue directly with dry needling and ART to release what’s holding, then addressing the movement pattern driving it in the first place.

Stretching your tight traps isn’t working — because stretching isn’t the problem.

Desk workers. Overhead lifters. Drivers. Your upper traps are chronically overloaded and guarding. That’s not a flexibility issue. That’s a tissue problem.

Dry needling + ART gets into the muscle directly — releases the tension, resets the pattern, and actually holds.

DM me for more info or to book a free movement screen.

She survived the dry needling a few sessions ago… and came back for more. 😂

This time we’re scraping — and yes, it looks as intense as it sounds. But the results speak for themselves.

This is my favorite part of the job — getting athletes back to doing what they love, and having a little fun along the way.

Your shoulders are holding you back more than you think.

I spent today at the Beauty Boost Fitness Sampler treating athletes and active women across Cincinnati — and almost every single one had the same thing going on. Tight, restricted shoulders affecting their movement, their workouts, and their performance.

The good news? It’s very fixable.

I have a few spots open this week for a free 15-minute movement screen at my office. No commitment, just answers. DM me to grab one.

Training stress isn’t just about how much work you do — it’s also about how your body responds to it.

🔹 External load = the work performed
(mileage, weight lifted, training volume)

🔹 Internal load = how your body handles that stress
(fatigue, soreness, recovery, sleep, stress)

Two athletes can complete the same workout and recover very differently.

Performance and recovery improve when training load and recovery capacity are balanced — not just when you “push harder.”

Sciatica isn’t always just “bad luck.”

Poor lifting mechanics can put excess stress on your spine and irritate the nerve — leading to pain down your leg.

Fix the movement, not just the symptoms.
