These conditions are often undertreated and mistaken for normal aging. Key strategies include fostering social connection, promoting physical activity, managing chronic illnesses, and breaking the stigma to encourage seeking professional help.Common Mental Health Conditions in GeriatricsDepression: The most prevalent mental health problem, often co-occurring with chronic illnesses.Anxiety Disorders: Frequently linked to social isolation or fear regarding health changes. Cognitive Impairment/Dementia: Over 50% of people in long-term care facilities have some form of cognitive impairment.Substance Use/Misuse: Includes overuse of alcohol or prescription medications. High Su***de Risk: Men over 85 have the highest su***de rate of any group. Signs and Symptoms to Watch ForPersistent sadness, hopelessness, or flat mood.Noticeable changes in energy levels, appetite, or sleep patterns. Increased social withdrawal, isolation, or loss of interest in hobbies. Difficulty concentrating, confusion, or forgetfulness. Irritability, anger, or increased worry. Unexplained physical symptoms like headaches or chronic pain.
