This article recently caught my attention. I'm not surprised by telehealth companies like this at all and I've run into situations like this myself. At the end of the day, it all comes down to the fact that the GLP1 medications are too expensive. Employers and insurance companies do not want to cover them, and if they do cover them it is only with the intention of doing so in the short term. The manufacturers do not want to lower their costs and have no incentive to do so because the demand remains high and patients are finding ways to pay for them even when insurance companies will not cover them. It feels rotten through and trough. In my opinion, the ultimate solution is for the government to create regulation around the cost of these medications and require health insurance companies to cover the because allowing the free market, the pressures of supply and demand, to influence the price of GLP1s has obviously not worked.

Telehealth companies offer lifestyle support so people taking obesity drugs can have the most success losing weight. But employers also want the telehealth providers to limit spending on the drugs.

I feel like this information about high dose Wegovy (semaglutide) is everywhere I look right now, but when I sat down to find the original publication of these numbers...there is none. There's "new data," a "new analysis" from a "late-stage trial" that was shared at a conference and on the Novo Nordisk website. But no publication of the data in a peer reviewed journal. And the claim that patients are losing "nearly 28% of their weight" is giving me pause because Eli Lilly's new G3 drug, retatrutide, coming out in 2027 is reported to have a 28% weight loss profile. It's frustrating, because clearly all of this is marketing for the sake of profits and market shares. In my opinion, semaglutide could become the preferred GLP1 medicine if it were significantly less expensive than tirzepatide (Zepbound) or if it were covered by more insurance companies. What do you think?

Novo Nordisk released new data that could help boost the case for the higher dose version of its blockbuster obesity injection Wegovy.

I saw this article recently and the idea of a GLP1 implant is very interesting, I think. The article raises concerns about barriers to access for a therapy like an implant. I would compare this to the Nexplanon birth control implant. The procedure to place the Nexplanon is very easy for clinicians to learn and takes less than 5 minutes to actually do. A GLP1 implant certainly isn't an option for a telehealth program, but I don't think more options are a bad thing. What are your thoughts on the pros and cons of a possible GLP1 implant?

Vivani Medical is developing an implant of semaglutide, the active ingredient in Novo Nordisk's obesity injection Wegovy and diabetes counterpart Ozempic.

Having trouble at the pharmacy?

The Medicare Bridge is a new program, so some pharmacies may still be learning the process. If your prescription can't be processed right away, don't panic. Ask your pharmacist whether the claim is being submitted through the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program.

You don't have to navigate it alone. Visit OAC's Medicare Bridge Resource Hub for practical guidance to help you prepare for your pharmacy visit: https://www.obesityaction.org/medicare-bridge

I'm not a dietician or a nutritionist. My education when it comes to nutrition consisted of a month in the dialysis unit and someone explaining carb counting to me (I still don't understand it). But! I do know consuming adequate fiber helps lower cholesterol, stabilize blood sugar levels, and reduce risk for colon cancer. So here are some of my recent favorite higher fiber foods:
-sweet potatoes
-avocados
-KashiGO cereal (the peanut butter flavor is awesome)
-Mission Keto tortillas
-popcorn
-bananas
-artichokes
-asparagus
-beets
-hummus and crackers
-nuts like almonds
What are your favorite sources of fiber?

This was very powerful for me.

I'm not a dietician or a nutritionist. My education when it comes to nutrition consisted of a month in the dialysis unit and someone explaining carb counting to me (I still don't understand it). But! I do know consuming adequate protein is super important while on a GLP1 to reduce the risk of muscle loss. So here are some of my recent favorite higher protein foods:

-cottage cheese (whole fat, because fat free cottage cheese makes me sad)
-hard boiled eggs
-bone broth with collagen
-KashiGO cereal (the peanut butter flavor is awesome)
-beef jerky
-sardines
-shrimp cocktail
-hummus with chips or crackers
-peanut butter with carrots
-nuts like almonds

What are your favorite sources of protein?
