🕐 The same cup of coffee doesn't do the same thing depending on when you drink it before exercise.

A crossover study had participants consume an identical dose of caffeine, 3 milligrams per kilogram, before exercise sessions held either at 8 am or 5 pm.

Compared to placebo, caffeine increased maximal fat oxidation by only 10.7% when consumed in the morning.

That same caffeine dose, consumed before an afternoon session, increased maximal fat oxidation by 29.0%, nearly three times the morning effect.

Researchers note that fat oxidation and aerobic capacity during exercise are naturally somewhat lower in the morning compared to the afternoon, even without any caffeine involved.

Rather than helping overcome this natural morning dip, caffeine appears to widen the existing gap, amplifying the afternoon's already higher fat-burning baseline even further.

This diurnal, or time-of-day, variation adds a genuinely useful layer of nuance to advice about "coffee before a workout."

For anyone specifically optimizing for fat oxidation during exercise, this research suggests afternoon sessions may extract more benefit from the same caffeine dose than morning sessions would.

This doesn't mean morning workouts with coffee are pointless. Caffeine still provided a real, measurable benefit in the morning, just a comparatively smaller one.

Personal schedule constraints still matter more than chasing marginal fat-oxidation percentages, so this is a secondary optimization rather than a reason to abandon a preferred workout time.
