Congratulations to Christine McDaniel, the 2026 Citizen of the Year, Sponsored by C Spire and Presented by the Chamber of Commerce at the Chamber's 80th Annual Banquet on October 14, 2026!
Below is our introduction of Mrs. McDaniel.
Our Citizens of the Year have been business leaders, educators, physicians, and advocates: Ed Peacock III, Lela Keys, Josephine Rhymes, Charles Langford, Jimmy Walker, Charles Reid, Dr. Val Towner, Dr. Peggy Wells, Hartley Kittle, Aurelia Jones-Taylor, Nan Hughes, John Ruskey, and Dianne Mitchell, just to name a few. Each of them has given this community far more than they ever received. Tonight, we add one more name to that list.
She was born right here in Clarksdale, the fifth of six children, in a home she describes as full of “love and discipline.” If you know her, you have seen plenty of both.
After graduating from W.A. Higgins High School in 1962, she studied at Tougaloo College and earned her nursing diploma in St. Louis. Then, in 1967, she came home. For 38 years, she cared for this community at our hospital here in Clarksdale, serving as charge nurse, house supervisor, and nurse manager. In 1985, the hospital's physicians named her Nurse of the Year. When she retired in 2005, she lasted about a year before taking on another ten years caring for our seniors at the S.L.A. Jones Senior Activity Center. Some people retire. She just changes uniforms.
Her real work, though, has never had a time clock. She has served on the boards of the American Cancer Society and the Tutwiler Clinic, and has helped lead the Breast Cancer Awareness Walk, the Relay for Life, and the NAMI and Alzheimer's walks. She chaired the city's observance of the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s death and also chairs the Jericho Project. She co-chairs the Clarksdale unit of Keep Mississippi Beautiful. She is also a devoted recycler, so if you leave a plastic cup on your table tonight, consider yourself warned.
Every month, she delivers meals for the Care Station. Every Friday, she helps pack weekend food bags. And she coordinates our monthly community food distribution, so that our neighbors, young and old, don't go hungry.
Her faith has guided all of it. At Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, she is a Eucharistic Minister, sings in the choir, sits on the parish and finance councils, and serves as business manager. For 25 years, she guided our young people as a youth minister, and in 2016 the Catholic Diocese of Jackson awarded her its Bishop Chanche Medal for a lifetime of service to church and community. For more than six decades, she has been a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, a charter member of the local Iota Delta Omega chapter, and its president for eight years.
She keeps what she calls her “Personal 50 Club”: fifty years since high school, fifty years of marriage, fifty years of sorority membership, fifty years since nursing school. By now, she has passed sixty on most of them. At this point, the only thing she hasn't done for fifty years is sit still.
She has been a devoted wife, a mother, a “bonus mom,” a grandmother, and a great-grandmother. I'm also told she plays video games, so to the young people here tonight: she isn't just your role model, she may be your toughest competition.
Nurse. Servant. Mentor. Organizer. Neighbor. For a lifetime spent healing, feeding, and lifting up the people of this community, it is my great honor to present to you the 2026 C Spire Citizen of the Year: Mrs. Christine Coburn McDaniel.
