Every child with an IEP, every young adult with autism searching for meaningful employment, every person with sensory processing challenges trying to navigate a loud and overwhelming workplace deserves the same opportunities, dignity, and respect as anyone else. Disability rights are not special rights. They are human rights.

As a parent, educator, employer, or community member, we all have a role in creating spaces where individuals with disabilities can learn, work, thrive, and belong. Accommodations aren’t advantages….they are tools that help level the playing field.

Recent discussions across the United States have raised concerns among disability advocates about potential changes to Medicaid, special education funding, community-based supports, and employment services that many individuals with disabilities rely on every day. These conversations serve as an important reminder that the protections and supports we have today should never be taken for granted. (Info from Project Disability- Harvard Law School)

The future of disability rights affects all of us. It affects the child learning to communicate through an AAC device, the teen preparing for life after graduation, and the adult striving for independence in their community.

Let’s continue to advocate, educate, and speak up!! Every person deserves access, opportunity, and the chance to live a full and meaningful life.

Developmentally disabled children in Willowbrook Institution. Two to a cart.

Willowbrook was designed to house 4,000 residents, but there were over 6,000 in 1965, when Senator Robert F. Kennedy toured the facility and called it a “snake pit.” He described the residents as "living in filth and dirt, their clothing in rags, in rooms less comfortable and cheerful than the cages in which we put animals in a zoo.”

In some of the deepest wards, such as Building 6, there was only one attendant for approximately 50 severely and profoundly disabled children.

Even after Geraldo Rivera’s investigative report, exposing the horrific conditions on camera in 1972, Willowbrook didn’t close its doors for good until 1987. 💔

Why Do Some Autistic Children Line Up Toys?

Many parents notice their child lining up cars, blocks, random household objects or other toys and wonder why. For some autistic children, lining up objects can be calming, enjoyable, and a way to create order in their environment.

This behavior may help children:
🚌 Explore patterns and organization.
🚌 Feel calm and regulated.
🚌 Learn about objects in their own way.
🚌 Create predictability in their day.

Lining up toys isn’t necessarily something that needs to be stopped. Instead, it can be an opportunity to connect with your child by joining their play, talking about the objects, counting them, or sorting them together.

Remember: Play doesn’t have to look the same for every child. Understanding the “why” behind a behavior helps us better support and connect with our kids.
