One minute they're napping. The next they're racing through the house 😹

Scientists say the "zoomies" — short bursts of high-speed running, spinning, and jumping — are usually a normal behavior known as frenetic random activity periods (FRAPs). They can be triggered by excitement, play, or a sudden release of energy after resting. Researchers also say many cats get the zoomies after using the litter box, in what some scientists have nicknamed "poo-phoria."

Experts add that zoomies are generally a sign that pets are healthy, excited, and having fun. However, if the behavior becomes repetitive, lasts unusually long, or leads to injuries, they recommend consulting a veterinarian.

A little preparation can go a long way for anxious pets ❤️‍🩹

The ASPCA is reminding pet parents to plan ahead for Fourth of July celebrations, when fireworks, loud gatherings, and barbecue foods can pose risks for animals. Experts recommend keeping pets indoors in a quiet room, playing calming music, providing a favorite toy or enrichment activity, and making sure ID tags and microchip information are up to date in case a frightened pet gets loose.

The ASPCA also recommends keeping pets away from fireworks, alcohol, fatty foods, bones, corn cobs, skewers, and other cookout leftovers that can be dangerous if eaten. If your pet is especially fearful of fireworks, talk with your veterinarian before the holiday about ways to help them stay comfortable.
