Socrates, one of the greatest thinkers of Greek philosophy of antiquity, famously said, “ The strongest minds discuss ideas; the average minds discuss events; the weakest minds discuss people.” Nevertheless, today instead of someone’s intentions or business we will tackle an object that is Candelabra.
This term emerged in 1811 as a “table to support lamps and candles.” It originated from the Latin” Candelabrum”(singular) and “Candelabra”(plural) with the meaning of candlestick. But from Old English onward, it has come to be accepted as candelabra specifically by Britannica dictionary for the singular and candelabras for the plural.
Primarily, Candelabra stands for a large decorative candle holder with multiple branches or arms or, in the modern era, an electric light fixture similarly shaped. The Romans, who are known for extravagant light fixtures, designed the first candelabras that were found at Pompeii, one of the well-known sites.
Throughout, candelabra has been differentiated , on the one hand, from chandelier that is a single light fixture suspended from the ceiling and incorporated with a serie of light bulbs; whereas candelabra is made for table or stand and consists in branched-candlesticks. On the other hand, a menorah exists as a candelabra with a seven or nine branches or light holders, depending on the religious significance.
