The patient testimonials we heard during the Patient-Focused Drug Development program on nonhealing wounds were incredibly powerful.

Patients candidly shared the physical, emotional, and psychological toll that living with a chronic wound has had on their lives and on their families.

We also heard from caregivers, the often-unsung heroes who provide unwavering support throughout the wound care journey. Their stories underscored the far-reaching impact of chronic wounds and the urgent need for continued innovation, research, and advocacy.

I applaud Robyn Bent, Ethan Gabbour, and the FDA team for organizing such an important and meaningful event. And to Vickie Driver and Michelle Tarver, your vision for the Wound Care Collaborative Community (WCCC) has truly flourished over the past five years.

Yesterday at the KSUCPM North Coast Foot & Ankle Symposium, I had the privilege of wearing two hats: moderator and speaker for an outstanding wound care session.

From reconstructive techniques and limb salvage to GLP-1s and emerging AI applications, the discussions highlighted how rapidly wound care is evolving through innovation and collaboration.

I was especially excited to share insights on "Artificial Intelligence & Wound Care: What's Here and What's Next" and explore how technology is helping shape the future of clinical practice.

We discussed how sometimes the clinic visit itself can become part of the problem.

For patients managing lower-extremity wounds and edema, a trip to the clinic may mean hours of travel, transfers, sitting with the leg dependent, and disruption of compression or elevation routines.

A patient can spend days making progress at home only to lose ground during a single medical excursion.

This raises an important question: How do we deliver necessary care without unintentionally disrupting healing?

The FDA is asking people living with nonhealing chronic wounds to share their experiences during its upcoming Patient-Focused Drug Development (PFDD) Public Meeting.

📣CMS releases long-awaited topical oxygen therapy proposed LCD

After years of advocacy, research and collaboration across the wound care community, CMS has released a long-awaited proposed Local Coverage Determination (LCD) for topical oxygen therapy (TOT) for Medicare beneficiaries with diabetic foot ulcers.

The proposed policy would provide coverage for eligible patients whose ulcers have failed to heal despite four weeks of optimized standard care.

While this is still a proposed LCD and the public comment period is now open, I believe this represents meaningful progress for the individuals affected by diabetic foot disease.
