What is Peer Support?
Certified peer support is a mental health and recovery service provided by individuals who use their own lived experience with mental illness, trauma, or substance use to help others. These professionals are formally trained, state-certified, and work alongside treatment teams to offer empathy, guidance, and practical support.
What a Certified Peer Support Specialist Does:
Provides Non-Judgmental Support: They act as mentors who "meet you where you are," offering authentic understanding because they have navigated similar challenges themselves. Navigate Systems: They help clients access resources for treatment, housing, and employment. Teach Advocacy: They equip individuals with skills to advocate for themselves and work with their care plans. Model Recovery: They demonstrate that recovery and personal wellness are possible.
