☯️ Every posture has a martial purpose.

“Functional training may be gained through the solo exercise by imagining an opponent vying with you as you go through the postures. Your mind operates to create this imaginary opponent. If you disregard this vital aspect, your postures will lose meaning and trueness, and the exercise will become merely a mechanical charade.”

— T'ai Chi: The Supreme Ultimate Exercise for Health, Sport, and Self-Defense

One of the things I appreciate about Tai Chi is that the movements aren't simply choreography. Understanding what a posture is meant to do can change the way we practice it.

Keeping the martial applications in mind gives the movements intention and helps ensure the body mechanics and alignment are correct.

💬 When you practice your form, do you visualize the martial applications behind the movements?

HAHAHA!!!!!

☯️ You may have to explain this one to your friends. 😄

“Your Tai Chi didn’t repulse me.”

“That’s because you’re not a monkey.”

If you practice Tai Chi, you know.

Sometimes it’s good to have a little fun with an art we take so seriously.

Something to consider as we practice our Tai Chi.

Something to consider as we practice our Tai Chi.

☯️ Learning to let go is part of the practice.

“We first learn about the tension in body, shoulders, arms, and abdomen; we learn to relax and let go. Then we learn about tension in our mind, its name is ‘fear’.”
— Wolf Lowenthal, Gateway to the Miraculous

One of the first things Tai Chi teaches us is to become aware of tension. We notice it in our shoulders, our arms, our breathing—and slowly learn that we don’t have to hold on to it.

With continued practice, that awareness can reach beyond the body. We begin to recognize what we’re holding onto in our minds as well. Learning to relax and let go is a lifelong practice, both in Tai Chi and in life.

💬 Has Tai Chi helped you deal with stress?
