"Although it is difficult to drown out the voices all around me telling me to control my children, as hard as it can be to stay focused on my goal, I simply cannot allow myself to be concerned with getting quick results. Parenting is not a sprint, it’s a marathon. I’m in it for the long haul. I’m not interested in controlling my children, mostly because I am morally opposed to that idea, but also because I know that’s a temporary means to the wrong end. It makes adults feel satisfied to see that what they’re doing seems to be working, so surely kids must be internalizing the right lessons. Except punishment and control will never inspire the heart. They will never inspire true goodness and morality and self-discipline. Those things have to come from within, which requires the heart to be touched and inspired."

My goal as a parent is not to produce perfectly well-behaved children who never make poor choices or meltdown or struggle. One study of college students found that those who play a lot of violent videogames are less upset by images that disturb others. Researchers suggest they've developed a form of "emotion-blindness" where they can overlook the graphic images and focus on the task at hand. The researchers are quick to point out that this is not to say videogames destroy empathy—it may be that people who like violent videogames were not upset by such imagery in the first place. It may be just that the brain is malleable that way. Worth discussing.
