We are grateful to share this letter (in the caption below) from a family member whose parents have called Creekside home. ❤️Receiving letters like this is a meaningful reminder of the impact our team has on residents and families every day.
"I've been meaning to write this for some time . . .
Since my folks moved to Creekside about 18 months ago, I've visited several times from overseas, and during these visits I'm there several hours a day. I've gotten to know many of the people who work at Creekside and have seen them in action under extremely difficult conditions, such as the move itself and my father's death and Mom's learning to live without him.
Of course I appreciate all of the things that happen in the course of caring for the residents (that require so much organization!), like medications given on schedule, appointments arranged, health concerns followed up on, nutritious meals served, activities offered. What has really struck me, though, are all the small things: a receptionist (unfailingly cheerful during a 10-hour shift) reminding me of an activity that my mom might enjoy, Mom bragging about how staff members pop in to chat with her periodically, breakfast on a tray in her room when she doesn't feel like going to the cafeteria, when the coffee gets cold it gets replaced with a fresh cup.
I've also learned a lot simply by watching staff interact with residents—their gentleness, their respect, their tact and flexibility. More than once I've found myself borrowing an approach or a turn of phrase and thinking, "That's a better way to handle the situation."
Whenever I am at Creekside, I see people paying attention to the residents, noticing what is going on with them, and making adjustments when needed. My mother's needs are not the same now as they were when she first arrived, or even six months ago, and I've appreciated the patience with which those changes have been handled. This is especially comforting to me given how far away I live!
