I saw a post in a mom group where a commenter suggested no one should hire a homebirth midwife because we “take a six week training course & cannot navigate serious challenging births.”
Another comment, “10% of babies born need some kind of resuscitation which isn’t possible at home, I wouldn’t risk it.”
Let’s set the record straight.
Home birth midwives are experts in physiological, NORMAL birth.
We are also licensed medical providers. If you see the letters LM, CPM next to your midwife’s name she’s met requirements individual to your state in addition to meeting standards required by the North American Registry of Midwives (the MINIMUM training period is 2 years to become a NARM registered midwife)
When you hire a midwife, you aren’t hiring a midwife to squeeze your hips & braid your hair & for us to tell you that you’re doing a good job. Although, I’ll be honest a lot of times we’re doing those things too.
You hire a midwife to be there for the RARE. We know how to resolve a shoulder dystocia, manage a hemorrhage & resuscitate your baby. We know how to care for you & your baby throughout pregnancy, birth & postpartum.
And of equal importance? We know when something isn’t normal, & when we need to refer or risk out.
