Your flu vaccine cannot give you the flu. It’s an inactivated (dead) virus or contains no live virus at all — biologically incapable of causing infection.

So why do some people feel achy or run a low fever after? That’s your immune system doing exactly what it’s supposed to: building antibodies. Common side effects after vaccination include soreness, mild fatigue, and low grade fever for a day or two — that’s immune activation, not illness.

Other reasons people blame the shot:
• They caught a different virus around the same time (flu season = cold/RSV season too)
• They got exposed to flu right before the shot, before protection kicked in (~2 weeks to full immunity)
• Coincidental timing — not causation

🚨Just because something is sold in a pharmacy aisle doesn’t mean it works.

Oscillococcinum is marketed for flu-like symptoms and looks a lot like the other OTC products sitting beside it.

But look at what’s actually in it:

🦆 The active ingredient is listed as Anas barbariae, hepatis et cordis extractum — an extract from the liver and heart of a Muscovy duck.

đź’§ It starts as a 1:100 dilution and is serially diluted 200 times.

That’s 200CK homeopathic dilution.

At that level of dilution, there is statistically no meaningful amount of the original duck extract remaining.

The placebo effect is real. But for an illness that can lead to serious and fatal complications, you should know you’re buying a placebo with a high price tag.

A recent preprint on leftover breast milk has understandably gotten a lot of attention, especially from parents who have had to throw away milk their baby didn’t finish.

The findings ARE interesting.

Researchers found limited bacterial growth in leftover milk during the time periods they studied. That could eventually help inform whether current recommendations are more conservative than necessary.

But there are some important caveats: this was a small study in Germany of 44 healthy, full term infants, and it measured bacterial growth. It has also not yet been peer reviewed.

So while this research is worth paying attention to, it does not establish that leftover breast milk is safe to store and feed for longer periods, and it has not replaced current recommendations.

There’s nothing wrong with questioning guidelines. In fact, that’s how science progresses.

The evidence may eventually support changing recommendations. We just aren’t there yet. 🖤

Package inserts contain extensive safety information, including adverse events reported during clinical trials.

But “reported after vaccination” does not automatically mean “caused by vaccination.”

A person can have a car accident, break a bone, develop appendicitis, or experience another medical event after receiving a vaccine. Those events may still be documented because researchers need to capture what happened and then evaluate whether there is evidence of a causal relationship.

That’s why adverse event ≠ adverse reaction.

And it’s why a screenshot of an adverse event from an insert—without the surrounding context, comparison groups, frequency, or causality assessment—can give you a very different impression than the actual safety data.

Read the insert. Ask questions. Look at the evidence. Just don’t confuse “after” with “because of.”

And unlike many serious infections, measles is highly preventable.
