On Monday, May 11, the Portland nursing campus had the opportunity to host the Walla Walla University Board of Trustees meeting in the Lecture Hall.

Students also had the chance to join Dr. Alex Bryan and members of the Board for lunch and conversation — an opportunity to connect, share experiences, and highlight the accomplishments and community within our nursing program. 🩺✨

We are grateful for moments like these that allow our students and program to be recognized and celebrated!

Before Nurses Week ends, we want to recognize and appreciate our nursing students for their hard work, compassion, and dedication. 🩺💙 Thank you for the countless hours, the perseverance, and the care you give to others. And thank you to every nurse who stands beside patients during their most vulnerable moments.

Isaac Leontyuk is a 2024 graduate currently working at Adventist Health Portland, now part of the float pool after completing his residency in Telemetry! đź«€

Isaac chose WWU for its proximity to home, small class sizes, and faith-based environment. One of his most impactful experiences was the summer term for transfer students—challenging, but deeply rewarding, especially after the isolation of learning during COVID.

What he misses most? The strong sense of community—studying, learning, and growing alongside classmates and professors who made the journey meaningful.

Isaac is now working at Adventist Health Portland, currently in the float pool after completing his residency in Telemetry. During his time there, he was honored as a Rising Star nominee and represented his unit in the hospital’s Grand Governance Council.

He shares that one of the most rewarding parts of nursing is caring for patients and supporting families—especially during end-of-life care, where compassion and presence make a lasting impact.

His advice for students preparing for the NCLEX: “Stay calm and study smart”. Focus on understanding your mistakes rather than overloading yourself with information. Trust your preparation—you’ve got this!

April 4th was National School Librarians Day, and we want to recognize and thank our incredible nursing librarian, Douglas McClay! 📚💙

With over 10 years serving the WWU School of Nursing, Douglas has been a constant support for our students. His favorite part? Being part of each student’s journey — from dedication to pinning — and seeing where nursing takes them.

His advice to students: Be persistent. Try different paths, use new keywords, and don’t hesitate to ask for help — he’s always there, even from miles away.

When asked about his most memorable experience, he shared that every day is meaningful, especially when the library is full of students, building a space of community, inclusion, and support (plus snacks!).

As this is his final year, he leaves students with this message:
“Stay awesome! … You are the light of the world.” (Matthew 5:14–16)

Thank you, Douglas, for being such an important part of our nursing community and university!
