Some of the most meaningful moments in hospice care are the ones that might seem small to everyone else.

Our patient Mr. Alton Estes is both blind and deaf. Without the ability to see or hear what is happening around him, his world can understandably feel uncertain and overwhelming. He often stays in his room, prefers very little interaction, and has struggled with wanting to eat or participate in activities.

But behind the walls he has built over the years as a form of protection is a sweet man who simply needed someone willing to slow down, enter his world, and earn his trust.

And one of our nurses, Kate, did exactly that.

Over time, the two have developed their own beautiful way of communicating. She uses sign language, allowing Mr. Estes to feel the signs through touch. With patience and consistency, he communicates back. What began as caregiving has grown into a relationship built on trust, understanding, and genuine connection.

Recently, something special happened.

After a good hair brushing and getting cleaned up, Mr. Estes agreed to get into his chair and leave the familiarity of his room. He went to the dining area, enjoyed a meal, spent some time near the windows, and experienced a change of scenery. Then his nurse asked if they could take a picture together.

He said yes.

For someone who often finds interaction stressful, that “yes” meant so much.

Mr. Estes spent his working years as a mechanic—a man accustomed to using his hands, working, fixing, and doing. Knowing that part of his story, our hospice team continues finding ways to bring pieces of familiarity and purpose back into his days, including a sensory mitten with chains and objects he can explore with his hands.

This is hospice care.

It’s learning someone’s story. It’s finding a way to communicate when words aren’t possible. It’s building enough trust that someone feels a little less vulnerable and a little less alone.

And sometimes, it’s helping someone step out of a dark room and back into the light. 💛

Question: How will we afford hospice care?

Answer: Good news!! 🙌🏽 Medicare and most insurances cover hospice care completely, so there are typically no expenses that are paid out-of-pocket by the patient/family. If a patient does not have any insurance options, we also take non-funded patients when we are able. 🫶🏽

The following are included in hospice care:

🔸Physician and nurse practitioner services
🔸Skilled nursing care
🔸Hospice aide services
🔸Medical social work services
🔸Counseling services, including spiritual
🔸Medications needed for pain relief and
symptom management related to the
terminal illness and related conditions
🔸Most medical equipment
🔸Medical supplies
🔸Short-term general inpatient (GIP) care for
symptom management that cannot
feasibly be managed in another setting
🔸Inpatient respite care, generally for up to 5
consecutive days at a time, to provide relief
for the caregiver
🔸Bereavement services for the family

Please don’t let possible perceived cost prevent you or a loved one from the life-changing benefits of good hospice care. We are happy to take your phone call and talk through all of this any time! Give us a call at (979)661-7272.

Grief has no timeline, no rulebook, and no single way it should look.

On National Grief Awareness Day, we pause to honor those carrying the weight of loss and to remember the lives and love that remain forever in our hearts.

At Acara Hospice, we believe caring for families extends beyond the bedside. We are honored to walk alongside patients and their loved ones through some of life’s most tender moments and to continue offering compassion and support through the journey of grief.

Today, check on someone who may be missing someone they love. Say their loved one’s name. Share a memory. Listen without trying to fix the hurt. Sometimes simply reminding someone that they are not alone can mean more than we realize.

🩷 In their memory.
🧡 In honor of their love.
💛 In support of every grieving heart.

You are not alone. Acara Hospice is here for you.

🩷 Celebrating One of the Very Best! 🩷

Yesterday, our team somehow managed to pull off the nearly impossible—we surprised Chesla Macias with an Appreciation Breakfast! 🎉🥞☕️ And if you know Chesla, you know that surprising her is no small accomplishment! 😉

Chesla is so much more than our Administrator and Chief Nursing Officer. She is a fierce advocate for our nurses, a devoted champion for our patients and families, our resident technology guru, the person who somehow knows the answer to all the things, and, most importantly, an incredible friend to so many. 💜

Behind every great team are leaders who believe in their people, encourage them to grow, and never lose sight of why we do what we do. Chesla is that kind of leader.

To say we are blessed to have her doesn’t even come close. Yesterday was our opportunity to make sure the person who spends so much of her time taking care of everyone else knows just how much she is appreciated, valued, and loved. 💐

Chesla, thank you for everything you do and for being such an important part of the heart of our team. We appreciate you more than words can say! 🩷👏🏼

Learning, laughing, and leveling up! 🔐🩷

This week, our RN Case Managers learned about upcoming Hospice Medicare changes—and put their knowledge to the test with some fun escape room challenges! There were plenty of laughs along the way, and the teamwork made learning even more memorable.

With hospice rules and regulations constantly evolving, staying informed is more important than ever. At Acara Hospice, we are committed to staying ahead of these changes and making sure our team has the knowledge, tools, and support they need to continue providing exceptional care.

Everything we do is rooted in kindness, compassion, and integrity—for our patients, their families, and the communities we are honored to serve.

Way to go, Team Acara! 👏🏼 We knew you would rise to the challenge, just like you always do. We truly have the best of the best! 🩷✨
