Sometimes birth doesn’t always go as planned.

We can do all the right things, take all the right classes, supplements, surrender and pray, and still we can be met with outcomes beyond what we planned for, or even considered possible.

I don’t consider trusting birth to be centered on when things go right.

I think often we think if we just trust birth enough, trust ourselves enough, then everything will go well!

And even though most of the time it does, becuase when we trust we allow and when we allow things can flow freely and uninterrupted.

But when things don’t go well, it’s not becuase we didn’t trust birth or trust enough.

I am learning that to truly trust means to allow Life to move through you as it is meant to.

What is life asking of you? Can you listen? Can you allow it without resisting it or trying to make it different?

Sometimes trusting birth, becomes trusting what is trying to move through this mother and baby.

We don’t always get to know why something happens a certain way, we just get to accept it or not.

What is Birth asking of you?

We each get to be co-creators in this Life, but not sole creators.

One of the hardest things as a midwife is to accept a birth journey that is hard and undesirable. To hold space for a purpose that is beyond myself and bigger than what I can bring to it.

We shouldn’t stop doing all the right things, because its not just about when things go right that those things served us, but they will serve us even more when things go unplanned.

Our capacity to meet our edge, and our birth journeys no matter the outcome, with resilience and growth, depends entirely on how we prepared.

So don’t prepare just for things to go well, prepare in order to accept all of Life and how it is wanting to move through you.

Prepare to Trust that your journey however it unfolds is a sacred one, and you are divinely destined and guided to recieve it as so. ✨

And when things don’t go as planned, don’t forget there is much beauty in sacred repair, and that we can reclaim with intention and purpose a rebirthing experience that can still heal the heart ❤️ 🌺

What is nourishment? What is it to *be* nourished?

I believe that holistic nourishment in pregnancy is more than vital signs and symptom check lists.

When I am caring for mothers I want to nourish not just the body but also the mind, emotional self, energetic self and the spirit.

I want to create a space and environment for mothers to fully drop in to their deeper selves and relax into their alpha brain waves, which is the most natural state of pregnancy.

I believe that a nourished mother will nourish her baby, and all we need to do is get out of the way and facilitate an environment where that can happen.

This is also why relationship is such an important part of our care, when mothers feel safe enough to let go and journey inwards much healing can be found.

Pregnancy has the chance to be powerful and beautiful.

And when it’s not, it can still be held with love and validation.

Holistic care is whole-body hands on heart centered care. ✨🫶🏽

At sacred birth midwifery, students are essential to our practice. If we want the practice of midwifery to continue and remain accessible we have to nourish the seeds that will grow it.

Especially when we are seeking
🦋 Midwives who believe in and provide care that trusts women and bodies,
🦋 Midwives who are respectful and provide care that encourages bodily autonomy and true informed consent
🦋 Midwives that view honor and hold birth as more than physiological but spiritual and Sacred
🦋 Midwives who put mothers first and nourish beyond routine clinical services

We view as Birth as Sacred, and strive to protect this is as much as possible by helping to teach support and encourage the next wave of midwives who will carry on this same mission.

Birth is more than the baby you recieve it’s also about the mother you will become and HOW you were held in your pregnancy and witnessed in your birth and supported during your postpartum matters.

Students are a sacred role in the mission of protecting and sustaining midwifery care, and we love honor and are so grateful for our Sacred Midwifery Students ✨🦋✨

Trusting birth isn’t just about when things go well and we celebrate.

For me, trusting birth has also become about learning how to make space and create the capacity to hold what is wanting to come through.

Discernment lives within this, because when we are truly connected within ourselves we have the ability to recieve messages and insights beyond data points.

Birth talks to us, talks to mothers and birth keepers.

Learning to listen, with the ability to respond, is responsibility.

Putting mothers and babies in categories of risk without also listening and honoring their experience of their own body and pregnancy is not wise.

This mothers baby was projected to be in the 90th percentile, as was her last, the medical system would easily offer her a C-section or induction at 39 weeks. Baby was born nearly 10lbs, she breathed her baby down and she pushed maybe twice following her own instincts, and baby was born with ease. No touching manipulating or assisting.

The context of healthy mothers and babies is important and this context also widely over medicalized in most hospital systems.

The purpose isn’t to sensationalize or idealize birth, it’s just to show the wide range of normal and possibility, becuase in today’s world of 30% csections and climbing induction rates it does matter for women to know what is truly possible when held in skilled and safe containers with the opportunity to trust themselves and their bodies.

Birth doesn’t always go the way you plan it, and that is where we learn what it means to trust birth.

What does it mean to you?

It’s a really important part of my practice to create as much space and encouragement as I can for parents to be the first hands to touch their baby.

In the sacred valley of Peru, traditional Andean midwives believe that as a baby is crowing and being born all of their chakras are open. They have so much reverence for this process that they intentionally do not touch vulvas or baby’s heads.

Intuitively I’ve always desired not to touch, but being given language and meaning for what I was feeling was so grounding.

One of the many benefits to creating a relationship with your midwife, and knowing who will be at your birth, is that if a baby is asking for help to be born a midwife’s hands are far from strangers hands. And I hold deeply the honor and sacred responsibility to receive a families baby. This is part of the work that’s called upon sometimes.

But the work is also creating space within myself to know the difference, and offer every possibility for babies first touch in this world to be skin on skin, because it does matter.

Not just for the baby but for the mother and the father. My mentor and teacher, Whapio, talks about the spiritual and transformational significance of fathers catching their babies or as she calls it “receiving their light” and how she has watched that act make them better more attentive and loving fathers.

I whole heartedly believe this to be true. We have turned catching babies into this unobtainable medical procedure, qualified by only a select few. When truly there is nobody more qualified, in a healthy and normal birth, than the parents to receive their own creation.

This an entire rite of passage that at the very least deserves enough reverence to be offered and then protected as much as possible. For many of us birth workers that protection includes our own inner work to constantly reevaluate is this touch necessary?

There simply, for myself, is so no greater joy than to witness two beings come together in love, step up, and choose to receive their own light ✨💜

Love full 🌕🌕moon babies!
This sweet boy really made his mom work for it! Always such a joy to see the look of shock and awe on mothers face once they cross that threshold of uncertainty and are then holding baby in arms 💙💙

Physically, humans don’t birth any different than most mammals.

What causes us so much trauma and fear around birth is our mind.

Our ability to create stories and over-think.

When I recommend child birth education to mothers I tell them, this isn’t education so that you will know and then be able to do.

Your body already knows how to birth and it doesn’t need to be taught.

But the connection between mind and body is so strong. And if we believe we can or can’t do something strong enough, our bodies will too.

Often the fear of something is worse than the thing itself.

I recommend childbirth education because, reclaiming our own body literacy around child birth is important, but mostly it’s for our minds to know so then it can relax and get out of the way.

Modern mind wants to know so much so we can anticipate and get ahead of the next move. Avoid unpleasant surprises and pitfalls.

But birth is not that way.

Birth is quite literally a spiral and vortex of winding and unwinding until full surrender to the unknown.

This is really uncomfortable territory for the mind that seeks comfort in knowing.

That resistance creates more fear and more fear creates tensions and more tension creates more pain.

I often find that my most important role in your birth space is the holding.

It’s an invisible doing. An energetic container of reminding you, by witnessing rather than coaching, that you can in fact do this.

Most of the time, that’s all mothers really need in a midwife.

A hand as they cross the threshold.

Yes, sometimes it’s also more than that.

But most of the time it isn’t. And that’s why who you choose to support you in birth matters.

How you feel matters in how you surrender, or don’t surrender.

Crossing the threshold is only something you can do, but how you are held matters in how you will cross.

There will be moments you will wonder if you can do it, you will question if you’ll survive - that’s Birth.

It’s not inherently flawed and dangerous, it’s a rite of passage and initiation into no longer fearing your own nature.
