All survivors belong in survivor-centered spaces. However, they are not always given the support they need or deserve. There are additional barriers that + survivors face when seeking support after sexual violence, one of those being with the support services themselves.

Some support services are separated by a gender binary, making it difficult for non-binary survivors to find a support group for them. Many providing care assume that the sexual assault was heterosexual, or may put LGBTQIA+ survivors in situations in which they feel obligated to “out” themselves. We need to create survivor support services that are not just welcoming of LGBTQIA+ survivors, but that are designed with them in mind.

Join us this as we honor LGBTQIA+ survivors and raise awareness surrounding sexual violence and the LGBTQIA+ community.

Domestic violence survivors know their stories and needs best, but abusers often work hard to make them feel like they don't. Supporting a survivor can mean empowering them and reminding them that they deserve to trust their own judgment and make the decisions that are right for them. Trauma-informed care recognizes how trauma affects the brain and often keeps domestic violence survivors in "survival mode," even after the abuse itself is over. It offers survivors a chance to rebuild the connections and trust that were fractured by abuse and betrayal. Learn more about the principles of trauma-informed care: https://bit.ly/2o28MA8

Supporting a loved one who discloses sexual assault can be challenging. Remember, trauma affects memory, and survivors may struggle to recall or accurately recount their experiences. This is normal and part of the brain's protective response during trauma. Avoid rushing them or asking intrusive questions. Instead, offer patience, understanding, and support. https://youhavetherightco.org/services/what-should-i-say-to-a-friend-family-member-and-or-loved-one-if-they-open-up-to-me-theyve-been-sexually-assaulted/ 🕊️💙

Today is the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia ( ). Abusers may choose to take advantage of societal stigma in order to hurt LGBTQ+ partners in specific ways, like threatening to out them, denying them access to gender-affirming medical care, or telling them that the abuse doesn't "count."

This is unacceptable, and these abusers are only emboldened by harmful legislation in many states. Survivors in the LGBTQ+ community deserve to be safe and have access to respectful, affirming care. 🏳️‍🌈💜 RT if you agree!

While some people may wonder if abusers are "out of control," this can actually make it easier for them to escape responsibility and accountability for their actions. Abuse is always a choice, and abusers are always in control of the choices they make to hurt and control a partner. This Mental Health Awareness Month, we thank our partners, forensic nurses, and allies for all they do.

As a forensic nurse, mental health awareness is not only important for the population you serve but for yourself and your peers. Many people often do not know where to start when it comes to getting help. Mental health is important and taking the first step can feel overwhelming. The "Learn. Act. Advocate" campaign can help to better understand how to take those first steps.
