From janitor to General Counsel—we are incredibly proud to celebrate our very own Julianne Cox, featured in this inspiring profile!

Julie’s journey to the executive table is a testament to sisu (courage and persistence). Growing up in a small, low-income town without access to reliable healthcare, she is now the legal force helping Hero Practice Services deliver essential dental, vision, and orthodontic care to over one million underserved children.

As a first-generation college graduate, fierce autism advocate, and dedicated mother, Julie brings unmatched empathy, operational expertise, and passion to our mission every single day. She proves that kids from small towns can do big, hard things.

Why We Show Up: Bridging the Rural Healthcare Gap

We believe every child deserves to see the world clearly, no matter where they live. Recently, our team took our mobile vision van to a rural community event in New Mexico, and the stories we heard from parents reminded us exactly why our mission is so critical. In rural America, the barriers to pediatric eye care are staggering. We met families who have been forced to drive hours across state lines, face $500+ out-of-pocket costs due to insurance gaps, or get turned away entirely. Two specific moments from this event will stay with our team forever...

Patient First, Always: One parent shared that they previously drove three hours to a Medicaid-accepting provider, only to be turned away because their frightened, young child couldn't sit perfectly still. They were asked to leave for disrupting the schedule. When they came to our mobile event, our incredible doctors worked their magic, met the child with patience, and completed a full, comprehensive exam with zero issues.

Breaking Financial Barriers: Another mother drove across state lines seeking care for her 2-year-old special needs daughter. While the child received an exam elsewhere, her extreme prescription meant custom glasses would cost over $500—an impossible expense for the family. Our team stepped in, fitted her with specialized Dilly Dally frames from our reserve supply, and ordered her glasses at no cost to the family. Even better? Thanks to our incredible partnerships, we were able to provide this little girl with a second pair of glasses completely free to ensure she always has a backup.

We are so proud of our doctors, our team, and our partners for showing up where it matters most. Together, we are changing lives, one prescription at a time. 💙

Last week, our Denver teams had the incredible opportunity to host a special event in partnership with former Denver Bronco and NFL standout, Von Miller. Through the Von’s Vision Foundation—whose mission aligns so closely with our own—we’re proud to expand access to essential eye care for children in our communities.

👓 Together, we were able to provide over 40 kids with comprehensive eye exams and glasses in a single day. A huge thank you to our dedicated doctors and staff who showed up with heart, energy, and commitment—working tirelessly to ensure every child received the care they deserve. Your impact goes far beyond one day.

And the work doesn’t stop there:
🏥 Hero proudly serves as the primary lab partner for Von’s Vision Foundation, producing glasses for events across the country.
📅 We host monthly “Von’s Locker Days” at our Front Range Colorado offices, continuing care for uninsured children and families.

Partnerships like this are what make lasting impact possible—combining passion, purpose, and action to help more kids see a brighter future.💙

Along with providers from several DSOs, Hero's VP of Clinical Ops Dr. Rebecca Misner, DMD spent a day at the California Capitol building in Sacramento meeting with legislators to discuss the impacts to Medicaid care if Prop 56 is removed. In congruence with our mission, we continue to advocate for plans that ensure all children receive access to the care they need and deserve.

Access to preventative dental care supports healthier communities and stronger health outcomes. Many patients already struggle getting appointments or locating providers that accept Medi-Cal Dental. Protecting access allows patients to address concerns early and strengthen communities across California. Coalition members across healthcare, advocacy, labor, and community organizations continue to work together to preserve access to care.

Having the ability and resources to provide a service is one thing. Having the heart and a willingness to serve is another. We are very proud of our teams who donated their time and skills to help kids get the dental care they need and deserve. Thank you to our friends at Give Kids a Smile for making this annual program so impactful! 💙

When children can’t access early care regular preventative dental care, small dental issues often turn into painful emergencies.

Too often, kids end up in emergency rooms for severe tooth pain—where providers can only treat the symptoms, not the underlying dental problem. This is traumatic for children, stressful for families, and far more costly for the healthcare system.

Proposed cuts to Medi-Cal Dental would make this crisis even worse by drastically reducing the number of dentists able to see children and further limiting access to care. Millions of California children would be affected. At Kids Dental Place, we believe access to care should be available for all of California’s children.

The attached press release explains the real-world impact these cuts could have on children, families, and pediatric dental providers across California.
