If someone you care about seems withdrawn, overwhelmed, or just not like themselves, check in. Then be willing to stay present for the answer.
Ask, “How are you really doing?”
If you’re concerned they may be thinking about su***de, ask directly: “Are you thinking about su***de?” Asking about su***de does not put the idea in someone’s head. It can open the door to an honest conversation.
Listen without judgment or rushing to fix things. Help them connect with someone they trust, a mental health professional, or crisis support. And remember to follow up. Connection and ongoing support matter.
If someone is in immediate danger, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. For crisis support, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline.
Your willingness to ask, listen, and stay present can make a difference.
