Sometimes, it's not about doing MORE. It's about changing how we create opportunities for communication. 🫶

Here are 3 small shifts I teach parents:

1️⃣ Instead of asking more questions…
Make a comment and give your child time to respond.

🎶 Try it musically: Sing about what your child is doing instead of quizzing them. “You're rolling, rolling, rolling the ball!” Then pause and see if they join in with a sound, gesture, word, or movement.

2️⃣ Instead of filling every silence…
Pause and give your child a chance to take a turn.

🎶 Try it musically: Sing a familiar song and pause before an expected word. “The wheels on the...” Give your child time to fill in the blank in whatever way they can.

3️⃣ Instead of saying “Say ___”…
Create a fun opportunity for your child to communicate without putting them on the spot.

🎶 Try it musically: During a favorite song, pause and wait expectantly before continuing. Your child might look at you, vocalize, use a gesture, or say “more.” Respond to their communication and keep the fun going!

*Great opportunity here for "Ready, Set... GO!" Try it each time before starting the music for extra big smiles and giggles. Make sure you dance too!

✨ Remember: communication isn't just spoken words. Sounds, gestures, signs, AAC, and other ways of connecting all count.

Our 8-week Sing, Play, Talk series kicks off tomorrow for little ones ages 10 months–3 years (with and without speech delays)!

Through purposeful music, playful interaction, movement, repetition, and connection, we’ll create opportunities for little ones to build the early communication skills that lay the foundation for language. 🗣️💛🎵
