Next up in our ✨Intern Spotlights✨, Maddie Cotton!

Why Mizzou Ortho? When I was trying to figure out where I wanted to train for residency, I knew I wanted a level 1 trauma center with an emphasis on research and a place with a good resident culture. Mizzou Ortho had been on my radar for a few years now as my parents used to work at MU and my grandparents who still live here in town spoke so highly of the Orthopedic group. When I came on my away rotation, Mizzou checked all my boxes and the residents made me feel right at home, I knew it was the place for me. I’m so excited to train here for the next 5 years (and also how cool is it to train at the hospital you were born at)!

Another cool tumor case! Our patient had a distal radius giant cell tumor that was incidentally discovered after a fall onto that arm. Dr. Belzarena treated via radical resection of ~8cm of the radius with fresh osteochondral allograft implantation.

In honor of recent Sarcoma Awareness month, check out this very cool case with Dr. Belzarena!

Our patient had a Grade 3 undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma of the left knee. They underwent radical resection followed by lateral meniscus repair and extensor mechanism reconstruction with Marlex mesh. Our PRS friends covered the skin defect with a latissimus free flap graft.

Our first ✨Intern Spotlight✨ of the year - Felicia Jones!

Why Mizzou? As a Columbia native, Mid-Missouri has always been home. Working with the ortho team as a scrub tech before medical school made it an easy decision to come back because of the people, the culture, and the commitment to teaching. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to train here while caring for the community that helped shape me.

Favorite places in Columbia: Fretboard, Beetbox, Rock Bridge State Park, Stephens Lake

Hobbies/Interests: Any DIY project, getting outdoors, baking/cooking, spending time with my family and our dogs, KC Chiefs

Subspecialty Interest: Undecided
Favorite OR music: 90s Hip Hop
Favorite bone: Femur
