Healthy Blue South Carolina

Healthy Blue South Carolina We have a name you can trust. When you cover yourself in Blue, it’s all about you. We have a history of caring. We launched our first HMO in 1984. government.

In 2008, we added our Medicaid option for people who are eligible in South Carolina. When we first went live, we were in 34 counties with fewer than 10,000 members. Since then, we are proud to say we have grown to be in every county in the state. Our main focus is you. We make sure:
• You have low copayments for visits to doctors and for generic or brand drugs.
• You get free extra benefits like

a free cellphone with free monthly minutes, data and text messages; a reloadable card to use at certain retail stores if you get your checkups; free car seat; girl scout membership; boys and girls club membership and free books for your young child.
• We have a prenatal program for moms-to-be.
• We also have a nurse help line you can call 24/7 to talk privately about any health topic. Or you can get help deciding what to do or where to go for a health problem.
• Our local staff can help you. Community Resource Coordinators help match your needs with local resources to get you the right care.
• When you need one, you get a case manager. A case manager will work with you and your doctors to help you take care of health issues like asthma, diabetes and pregnancy. There are many health benefits for children who follow healthy habits. They’ll have better self-esteem, stronger bones and lower risks of certain diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure.

Here are some ideas to help your child live a healthy life:
• Limit foods and drinks high in calories, salt and sugar like sodas, sports drinks, potato chips and fast food.
• Feed children low-fat meats like baked or grilled chicken.
• Don’t force children to finish every meal.
• Limit TV, computer time and video game time.
• Go out as a family for activities like walks or a trip to the park.
• Don’t use food as a reward or for comfort.

What other healthy habits do you do or want to start doing with your child?

June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month! Here are some ways to keep your brain healthy.

• Hit the books. Formal education can help reduce the risk of dementia. Take a class at a local college, community center or online.
• Have friends. Staying socially engaged may support brain health. Find ways to be a part of your local community or do activities with friends and family.
• Challenge your mind. Build a piece of furniture. Play games of strategy like bridge.
• Take care of your mental health. Seek treatment if you have depression, anxiety or stress.
• Break a sweat! Regular exercise that elevates your heart rate can reduce the risk of mental decline.

Well-child visit vs. sports physical: What's the difference? A well-child visit and a sports physical are not the same thing, but you only need one. Your child's annual well-child visit covers everything they need for a sports physical, and more.

During a well-child visit, your child's doctor will:
- Perform a complete physical examination
- Review your child's medical history and immunizations
- Talk to you about your child's development and behavior
- Answer any questions you have

During a sports physical, your child's doctor will focus on making sure they are healthy enough to participate in sports. They will typically:
- Perform a basic physical examination
- Review your child's medical history and immunizations
- Ask about any sports-related injuries or concerns

If your child is participating in sports, they will still need to have a well-child visit every year. A well-child visit is a more comprehensive exam that covers all aspects of your child's health, not just their physical fitness.

Schedule your child's yearly wellness checkup today to take care of both their well-child visit and sports physical at once.

Summer Sunshine is here! But before you soak up the rays, make sure your skin stays safe. Here’s how to keep your skin healthy and glowing:

- Use a water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.
- Hang out in the shade.
- Wear sun-protective clothing.
- Use a protective lip balm.
- Wear wraparound sunglasses.
- Try to be inside or under shade during the hottest hours of the day, which are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Keep babies less than 6 months old out of the sun.

Healthy Blue cares about your health, inside and out. Play it safe when having fun in the sun!

Healthy Blue May Photo Dump! 💙

May was a busy month for our Healthy Blue team. We took part in lots of events and spent time with families and communities throughout South Carolina.

From health fairs and diaper events, to school, library and community stops – we were everywhere. Our team shared resources, answered questions and gave out free goodies along the way. We were glad to connect with so many people and be part of events that support health and wellness.

We are thankful for our community partners who helped make these events possible.

Take a look at a few highlights from May.
