This Mother’s Day weekend looks a little different for me. My children won’t be with me, so instead, I’m spending it further studying, researching, writing letters, & continuing to fight for some of the most precious children we care for at Roots, children suffering with PANS/PANDAS.
As a mother who has personally walked through this with my own child, & built an entire practice on the back of that experience, I know the heartbreak, fear, helplessness, loneliness, & exhaustion these families feel. I know what it’s like to watch your child suffer and feel desperate for answers. I know the endless appointments, the research late into the night, the tears, the uncertainty, and the overwhelming weariness. I know what it’s like to drain your bank account in hopes your child will get even a little relief.
Lately, we’ve had many families come to us after exhausting countless efforts with specialists both in and out of South Carolina. Many arrive discouraged, depleted, & carrying the same desperation I once carried myself.
But we are also witnessing hope.
We are praising God for the children experiencing relief & improvement, some in drastic ways, others in smaller but deeply meaningful steps forward. Every single win matters.
The journey is often long, agonizing, expensive, & incredibly time consuming, even when families are doing “all the right things.” One of the biggest burdens families face is fighting insurance companies for potentially life changing therapies like IVIG infusions. In my career, I’ve personally written close to 50 letters to insurance carriers appealing denials & advocating for my patients, in general.
And I won’t stop.
We are committed to continuing this fight, to lessen the burden where we can, advocate fiercely, pursue answers diligently, and walk alongside these families every step of the way.
No two children are the same on this journey. Every story is unique. Every child deserves to be seen, heard, understood, and fought for individually.
We know you by name. We pray for you by name. And we love you for being YOU.
My promise is to never stop learning and never stop advocating for your child’s health. ❤️🐼
