SUGAR WORRIERS LISTEN UP 👂🏻

Yes, we have research *correlating* excess added sugar with cardiovascular disease. But what amount is excess? And does that mean any sugar is bad?! The fine details matter!

Nutrition research is complex , and here’s a reminder that nutrition lives in the ~grey~. According to a major study published in JAMA, cardiovascular risk shows up at the extremes of added sugar intake. Not zero.

Just because EXCESS added sugar (we’re talking the equivalent of 8 candy bars a day according to the study) ups your chances of heart issues, doesn’t mean you have to cut out ALL sugar. Those in the lowest quintile of the study (meaning zero risk) still ate the equivalent of 30-40grams of added sugar per day - a little with every meal and snack! That’s in line with the recommendation of no more than 10% added sugar calories.

So just because sugar in extreme mounts may be tied to health concerns doesn’t mean NONE is better. Having a healthy relationship to food is important too - and cutting out entire food groups increases your chances of bingeing. Balance isn’t sexy, but it’s the key! 🔑

A little nerdy 🤓 polyvagal theory for your feed this Thursday afternoon.

Learning about the different nervous system states has been SO helpful personally and professionally. When you can bring awareness to these different states and see how it can affect your thoughts and behaviors, and what choose instead to actually regulate, it can be life changing!

There’s no such thing as “good” and “bad” foods. All foods provide nutrients no matter what. Yes, some foods have more vitamins, minerals, and fiber. And some foods have more joy, community connection, and fun memories attached.

Remember all foods fit in a balanced eating pattern. 🫶🏻

You didn’t fail the diet, the diet failed you. They don’t work for 95+% of people!

Would you feel like a failure if you took a medication and it didn’t work for you? No! You’d blame the medication!

So why do we blame ourselves for something that is set up to fail?

You deserve to learn how to fuel your body from a place of kindness, not hatred. 🫶🏻

Eating disorders are complex mental illnesses. It isn’t just about the food, or just about control.

One step to working on recovery? Getting in touch with your emotions (yes, the very thing EDs usually try to numb or dissociate from, I know! 😫)

On the surface, we see ED behaviors like restriction, compulsive exercise, or purging. But there’s a function to them, or else you wouldn’t be doing them. What is the function? What difficult emotion is below the surface? And what is it you actually NEED that’s not your ED?
