Piriformis Syndrome: When a Small Muscle Causes BIG Pain
That deep ache in your buttock or pain that travels down the back of your leg may not always be coming from your lower back. The piriformis muscle could be involved.
The piriformis is a small muscle deep in the buttock that helps stabilize and rotate the hip. When it becomes tight, irritated, or overworked, it can irritate the nearby sciatic nerve, causing:
* Deep buttock or hip pain
* Pain that may travel down the leg
* Tingling or numbness
* Discomfort after prolonged sitting
* Pain with walking, climbing stairs, or certain hip movements
How can chiropractic care help?
Chiropractic care can address more than just the painful area. Depending on the cause, treatment may focus on improving pelvic and lumbar joint mobility, hip mechanics, muscle tension, and overall movement patterns. Soft-tissue techniques, stretching, and targeted exercises may also be incorporated when appropriate.
The goal is to reduce irritation and help the area move and function better.
