I would like to share one comment from this last week I heard over and over again from Olympic gold-medalists,Olympic coaches, and national competitors. But first I want to say thank you to all those who support our injured and wounded servicemember athletes!!!!! Here at Fort Benning Georgia we hosted three camps for our wounded service members this week. One for archery, one for marksmanship, and one for competitive bicycling.
The comment that I am referring to was "what is the difference between training and practice? Sometimes it was, "are you training or practicing"? ................ So I ask you, what is the difference?
Here is how it was explained to me.
Practice, is learning a new skill.
Training is Perfecting something that you already know.
Think about that for a minute and let's apply it to our training.
Each kyu Grade up to shodan is practice for the typical student. Not only every time we look at a new ryu, but every time we look at a new waza we are practicing.
So my next question to you is… What do we train?
My personal answer to that would be, the basics!!!!!!! Kamae, sanshin, kihon, Hokken juroppo, etc.
Why train the basics? And not to practice everything? ...... Because the basics are what make EVERYTHING Else work !!!!!!! If your basics are not good you will have difficulty making any new learned material work !!!!
My advice to everyone......... As Shihan Vandonk says, perfect practice makes perfect. So on that note, practice practice practice, and train hard !!!!!!!
There were many training tips and concepts that Were shared at the camps this week. I am going to share one of those concepts per week for the next several weeks. Please, try these concepts or ideas and share with others on this page what you learn from trying them. Until then…
Ninpo Ikkan !!!!!!!!
