What is Lupus?
Lupus is a chronic (long-term) disease that can cause inflammation and pain in any part of the body including the eyes. It’s an autoimmune disease, which means that your immune system — the body system that usually fights infections — attacks healthy tissue instead.
How does Lupus affect the eyes?
🔹Changes in the skin around the eyelids
🔹Dry eyes- approximately 20 percent of people with Lupus also have secondary Sjogren’s syndrome, a condition in which the tear glands do not produce sufficient tears
🔹Scleritis- painful red eye condition caused by inflammation in the white scleral (outer) layer of the eye.
🔹Retinal vascular lesions
🔹Nerve damage
🔹Some of the medications used in the treatment of Lupus may have ocular side effects. In particular Plaquenil can cause retinal toxicity over time, particularly at high dosages.
