This clinical trial is being conducted to evaluate the effect of omega-3 fatty acid (O3FA) supplementation (fish oil) on myositis disease activity and quality of life in adult patients with mild to moderately active Dermatomyositis (DM)/Juvenile Dermatomyositis (JDM). The study will also examine the results of following a healthy diet pattern with O3FA supplements or placebo capsules in adult patients with DM/JDM. Researchers believe that fish oil may decrease dermatomyositis disease activity and improve muscle strength.

Grateful to have completed the Faculty Leadership Institute (FLI) at The Ohio State University. Thank you to the OSU FAME team for creating such a thoughtful and inspiring program and Ohio State Rheumatology / Ohio State Wexner Medical Center for investing in the growth of faculty. ❤️

One of my biggest takeaways is that leadership training isn’t just for those with a leadership title. It’s for anyone who wants to communicate better, build stronger relationships, make wiser decisions, and grow both personally and professionally. The lessons from this course will stay with me far beyond the classroom and will shape how I approach my work, my colleagues, and everyday life.

Here’s to being a lifelong learner. 🌱✨

has been a passion of mine since my mother was diagnosed with ILD related to RA. (called ILD) is one of the most serious complications of some

I am so glad I got involved with the - ILD working group mctcmyositis ,as I get to work with amazing collaborators around the world.

Despite its clinical importance, there is still no universally accepted definition of lung disease in myositis- IIM-ILD which is a major barrier for cohort development, study comparability, clinical trials, and patient stratification.

Happy to share our systematic review protocol, describing our planned approach to systematically reviewing current definitions of IIM-ILD across adult and juvenile studies and to help inform future consensus-based nomenclature (link in the comments).

This work would not have been possible without the commitment and contributions of all colleagues involved in this international collaborative effort. Thanks Kostas Triantafyllias , Elena Joerns and Faye Pais for leading us on this significant project. Thank you Ohio State Rheumatology for supporting my research efforts!

Recently I saw a patient who developed 1-2 years after getting great implants. “There has been growing, yet inconsistent, evidence of inflammatory disease associated with . The pathophysiology is not well understood, but the concept of /inflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvants (ASIA) suggests an exaggerated hypersensitivity to silicone. Many rheumatological diseases have been associated with silicone implants, but a causal relationship has not well been established.A cross-sectional study found a higher likelihood of autoimmune/rheumaticdiseases including sarcoidosis, in patients with silicone implants, but data remains anecdotal regarding management and clinical response to removal.”

Metformin for Knee Osteoarthritis? 👀

A recent meta-analysis (5 studies, n=337) suggests that metformin may help:
✔️ Reduce pain
✔️ Improve stiffness
✔️ Enhance physical function
✔️ Boost quality of life

💡 Benefits were consistent across different formulations and durations—and may be even greater when combined with NSAIDs.

📊 A 2025 study found that metformin 2000 mg/day for 6 months significantly reduced knee pain (11.4 mm difference on a 100-mm scale) vs placebo—especially in patients with overweight or obesity.

⚠️ Important: These effects appear symptomatic, not disease-modifying (yet). More studies are needed to confirm long-term structural benefits.

Brepocitinib shows promise in 💊

In the largest myositis trial to date, brepocitinib 30 mg demonstrated rapid (by week 4), sustained (to 52 weeks) improvements in disease activity, skin involvement, and physical function—with meaningful steroid-sparing effects.

A step forward toward targeted, IFN-driven therapy in DM.
