Turf toe is a painful sprain of the main joint at the base of your big toe (the first MTP joint). It occurs when the toe is forcefully bent backward beyond its normal range (hyperextension), stretching or tearing the surrounding ligaments. It is common in athletes but can happen to anyone from a hard stub.

You may experience a sudden pop, followed by: Sharp pain at the bottom of the big toe joint. Swelling and bruising around the joint. Difficulty walking, pushing off the toe, or bearing weight.

R.I.C.E.

Rest, ice, compression and elevation.
